Cricket St. Thomas, Cannington Bears and Long Sutton have been tussling for the top positions in Div. 2 this year. Long Sutton scored well from the beginning of the season but as many know, it is not always a good sign to score well on the 1st! Gradually, both Cricket St. Thomas and the Bears overtook us, but we did have games in hand. As we played our penultimate game at home on 9th September we had 66 points, Cannington Bears were finished on 69 and Cricket had finished on 82. Our team played well that day, especially Becky Cousins, chipping in from off the green, taking the glory from Steve, and we gained 11 points, moving to 77 and claiming a definite 2nd place and promotion next year alongside Cricket St. Thomas.
As the day dawned (thankfully) dry on Sat. 16th, we now needed just 6 points to claim first Div. 2, but there is no such thing as ‘just’ in golf. One win and a half would be enough but the game was away on the Newton Course and we had illness and injuries amongst us, no Sandra, no Sarah and no Carole. There had been heavy storm showers and more were forecast; how muddy would it be? As I walked to the first tee I heard a shout go up…on the green? No, appreciation of Tim’s trick shot via bank and bridge to safety. Just the right amount of power and spin! A sign that luck is on our side or that it is going to be hard work?
The 15th was a pivotal hole. Franco and John Jeanes were out third ahead of Nigel and myself and Ray and Connie were the last pair. As we stood looking up the hill, waiting to play the 15th, we saw Franco and John’s group shake hands on the green. I couldn’t tell from body language which pair looked most chipper, but as they played down 16, Franco ‘s thumb went up, then, as Nigel and I played the 16th, Ray’s tic tac had me floored, so many fingers flying around…and I don’t do numbers! I found out later that he and Connie had already won…5 and 4, what a win…thanks to Connie said Ray. Our total score for the day was 16 points, so clear winners. A massive thank you everyone, on the day and through the season. We have had a lot of fun and I look forwards to next year. Our team for the day was Tim and Caroline, Angela and Dave, Franco and John, Nigel and myself, Ray and Connie, Steve Uzzell and Sean.
Looking forwards to next season…Div. 1 - Sturminster Marshall, Folke, Wincanton, Cannington A, Long Sutton, Cricket St. Thomas.
Div. 2 –Charminster, Wheathill A, Cannington Bears, Wheathill B, Yeovil, Bulbury Woods

The next 3 Counties event is the Freeman Trophy Day, which is being held at Cricket St. Thomas on Sat. 8th October. Details and sign up sheet on the noticeboard. We need a team of 12.
