3 Counties V Cannington
3 Counties report – 16.4.16 – Our first Summer League match, away at Cannington – It’s not summer yet! For half the match I was wrapped up Himalaya-style with 2 hats, 2 neck warmers, 2 underarmours, handwarmers in both pockets and I was still cold!
This being the start of a new season, we were high on expectations. The golf would be amazing! I am sure some of the time it was, but sadly Cannington got the better of us. Thank you to all the team for trying so hard. Sandra Ford and Rupert, Richard Overson and Denise Tomblin, Nigel Brighouse and Val Fraser, Sarah and Steve Uzzell, Tim and myself, Ray and Sean. Special thanks go to Richard and Denise for stepping into the gap at the last minute and for bringing in our only points… 4 to Long Sutton and 14 to Cannington.
Our next match is Saturday, 23rd April, away at Folke. Anyone interested in playing, please sign the sheet in the corridor or contact me on 07850595771. Fine weather forecast!

Long Sutton managed to field a full team of 12, 10 scores to count at the Folke venue. It was a beautiful sunny day with a cold easterly wind. Top scores for Long Sutton were John Jeanes 33pts and Nigel Brighouse 30 pts.
Overall Long Sutton total 277pts, Wincanton 298, Cannington 263 and Folke 329.
Long Sutton have some catching up to do at the next fixture, at home 13th March.
Match at Long Sutton 13th March 2016
On a beautiful sunny day the Long Sutton team had high hopes of winning on their home course. Again we had 12 players so 2 of us could have a bad day without affecting the overall score. Not really sure what went wrong! The conditions were tough with the ball not flying well due to the wind returning with a vengeance and little roll. The highest score was 32 with John Thomas being our star player with 30 points.
So third again with 250 points beating Cannington with 238 but Wincanton (261) and Folke (260) were first and second again.
It’s a close battle for 3rd and 4th places so do well at Wincanton on March 19th.
Match at Wincanton 19th March 2016

3 Counties Winter Salva - Cannington 13/01/2016
3 Counties Winter Salva at Cannington 16.1.16
A weather window of opportunity allowed teams from Long Sutton, Wincanton and Folke to assemble at Cannington for their round of the Winter Salva. Teams of 12 were needed. Long Sutton could only manage 11. I did have 12, briefly, but we were just about there as only 10 scores were needed. The best score on the day was 36 points, so well done John and Nigel who both had 31. An amazing number compared to my score!
Thank you to Cannington for allowing us to play…the greens were beautiful and we accept the rest as winter golf. We all enjoyed being out playing and a bonus, we managed to find our way in for pasty and chips without the use of torches! There is something special about relaxing and joining in with a hot meal at the end of a winter round and Cannington always make us welcome.
Heartfelt thanksfor everyone’s efforts. Much appreciated! John and Valerie Thomas, (Valerie having to lose 3 shots to play), Richard and Angela Body, Christine Turner (all never having played Cannington before, so good experience in the bag I hope for our summer league matches), Sean Monaghan, Ray and Tim Edwards, Nigel Brighouse, Carole Paterson and myself.
Long Sutton were last with 250 points, Cannington 296, Wincanton 305 and Folke 308.
The next round is at Folke on Saturday, 6th February. First tee 9.30. Come along for some more fun!
3 Counties Winter Knockout 28.11.15 v Cannington B
3 Counties Winter Knockout 28.11.15 – Long Sutton had to play the first round of the Winter Knockout this weekend against Cannington B. Just weeks ago, we would never have dreamt that we would be without Mike McRae for this match and it goes without saying, how sorry we are and how we were thinking of both Mike and Ann on the day.
I am glad to say that golf-wise it was a good day…the bad weather was late in arriving, all the games were good humoured and nerve-rackingly tight! Spider, Cannington’s Captain, had to take on Sean and Nigel singlehanded in the end. He showed me his team list with 7 names rubbed out. He had still been 2 players short that morning but had managed to rustle up one more…Lenny, who had been in Bridgwater Morrisons when the call came, planning food for a lazy weekend: Spider soon changed that! With short daylight hours, we just managed to fit the last game in. Ray and I held on to our one hole lead against Lenny and Harry and won on the 18th. If we had had to play on, we would have struggled for light beyond one more hole. Our win made it a win for Long Sutton, 3 and 2, which means we now play Folke on a neutral course.
Well done and thank you team – Tim and Carol Paterson, Angela and Dave, Sean and Nigel, Steve and Sarah, Ray and myself. Watch out for details of our next match.
3 Counties End of Season
3 Counties End of Season
Saturday, 19th September was a beautiful day…clear, blue sky, autumn colours and not a sound as each of the 3 Counties pairs, Wincanton and Long Sutton teed off. Usually, the banter flows: not this Saturday. The silence was worthy of the Ryder Cup. This was a critical match. Wincanton could not win the division, but they could peg us back to a draw. I need not have worried. The team won 4 games to 1 and on Saturday, 10th October, Freeman Trophy Day at Mendip Spring, we received the Division One Winners Cup for the first time! Well done Long Sutton. As you can see from the photo, we won well through the year…Winners Winter Knockout, (again for the first time), Second in the Winter Salva, Winners Div. 1 Summer League, Runners Up Joe Harring Trophy and Sandra Ford won the Captains’ Cup. On the day, Nigel Brighouse was our Best in Team and Sarah Uzzell won the Ladies Longest Drive. A good day at the end of a good year. Thank you to everyone for your efforts and team spirit throughout the year…not only did you bring home trophies, you added drama, humour and made it downright fun. Keep it up!
I hope I have not missed anyone out. My thanks go to Angela and Dave Baker, Steve and Sarah Uzzell, Steve Stopforth, John Jeanes, Nigel Brighouse, John and Pat Whitehead, Ray, Tim, Rupert and Henry Edwards, Judith Fox, Sandra Basford, Sean Monaghan, Ann and Mike McRae, Sylvie Coache, Rod Tucker, Luke and Adrian Nutland, Jony Tulk, Tyler, Mike Poole, Carole Paterson, Sandra Ford, Haydn Gibson, John English, Sam Clarke, Frank Penny, Nick Dennis, John Paterson, Kev Purdy, Richard and Angela Body, Rich Bartin, and last, but not least, Graham Holloway!
The cycle continues…We play Cannington A in the first round of the Winter Knockout. Look out for the sign up sheet in the corridor. New faces welcome.
The 3 Counties AGM will take place at Long Sutton on Wednesday, 4th November at 7.30.
