3 Counties League – Report on Winter Salva at Cannington
On Sunday, 1st December Long Sutton, Folke and Wincanton played the Cannington round of the Winter Salva. A new feel on the day as Folke has a new Captain in Kev Down and Wincanton, in Pete Williams. Nearly fifty players assembled in the clubhouse, some more awake than others! Coffee and breakfast downed, all teams finally present and correct, order of play sorted and teams posted on the board and we’re off! Plenty of advice…“You want to aim right of the green. Don’t go left, that’s out of bounds”. Oh, yes!! “See that bunker on the right? That’s the Captain’s bunker.” Grrr!!
We managed to muster 11 players out of a permitted 12, with a 10 best scores to count format. The fun mounted as the groups returned – leg pulling all round as the individual scores are put up. “Get lost did you? Christmas is coming you know!” (This from my husband. He obviously didn’t visit the OB and the Captain’s bunker), and “What happened to you then?”...banterspeak for “How come you scored so low?”/”I played well!” - endless recounting and suspense as the totals changed.
Thank you to all those who supported the club by playing and playing well enough to come out top on the day…301 points to us, 294 to Cannington, 293 to Folke and 274 to Wincanton.
The team - Jeff Price, Norman Banfield, Steve Southgate, Rich Bartin, Henry Edwards, Nigel Brighouse, Ray Edwards, Tyler Lennox-Gordon, Sarah and Steve Uzzell and myself. Hats off to Sarah Uzzell, who was the best player overall on the day, coming in with 38 points and never having played the course before.
We are playing our home leg at Orchardleigh on Sunday, 26th January, so why not have a change? Instead of booking in to Long Sutton for your Sunday morning round, sign the sheet in the corridor for Orchardleigh! Do it now as an antidote to the January Sales. 12 players needed. Full hcp stableford round, out as 4 balls, one from each club. £12 match fee includes informal meal at the end, served on a rolling basis. It will be a good day…Gill
