Long Sutton “B” v Westonsupermare "A"

Long Sutton “B” team had a further magnificent 5:0 win against Westonsupermare to move to 2nd in the table & bring the side firmly in contention for the Division 5 title.

All pairings won their matches by convincing margins, which hopefully is a good sign for our remaining 3 matches.

Other contenders for the title Mendip & Minehead have to play each other home & away, with the final match of the season where the "B" team are at home to Mendip.

The "B" team need to continue their current performance with matches against bottom of Division Taunton Vale both home & away over the next couple of weeks where we need secure good wins & forge a lead at the Top of the division.

League Match:         Mendip Golf Club v Long Sutton “B”

Long Sutton “B” team had a magnificent away win against top of table Mendip, which brings then firmly  back into contention for the Division 5 title.  The side won by a massive 4 games to 1 margin with the only lost game going right to the 18^th green. This is Mendip's first home defeat of the season due their massive home advantage of their course. Whilst the “B” team is currently only lying 4^th in the division it has significant games in hands on the other contenders apart from Minehead, which is the “B” team next match & will be key to the side’s promotion chances.

C - Team Match Report:

After defeats away to strong opposition at The Mendip and then Minehead, Long Sutton C team returned to winning ways with victory at Taunton Vale on Saturday.

And a creditable victory it was with the team winning 4 v 1, so a welcome 14 points added to our tally. Too early yet to establish where that puts us in the league placings but I shall advise as soon as I know.

Well done to the pairings of Nigel Griffiths/Jordan Taylor, Dave Baker/Rob Moore, Paul O'Dea/Jack Hardisty and my partner Roger Barnett.

Saturdays game also marked the end of our away fixtures so now our focus will the final run in of three home games and hopefully, continued success.

C - Team Match Report:

The C team game at The Mendip last Saturday was the half way point for us in this season's fixture listing.

Sadly not such a favourable result on this occasion as we were beaten 4 and 1 by a particularly strong home team.  A final result that hides the fact two games lost by just a single hole, one of those going down on the infamous 18th green. Fine margins!

Our winner pairing were the anchor men Paul O'Dea and Jack Hardisty who performed extremely well given the complications they faced.  Well done to Paul & Jack and thanks again to you all for your efforts.

Our next outing is again away so we need to collect ourselves, remain positive and start again.

Provisional team will be posted tomorrow. So indicate availability ASAP please.

C - Team Match Report:

Game 4 for the C team was our first true away fixture and it faced us up against Weston-super-Mare A team.

Their starting line gave food for thought as they fielded eight single figure handicappers. So pairings selected and order of play decided we set about our task in what was remarkably good weather. A rarity at Weston!

And what a tremendous result. A 3 to 2 win. So 11 points in the bag.

The lead and anchor pairings, whilst acquitting themselves admirably, were overcome by better (on the day) opponents. Sandwiched in between however, were the victorious partnerships of John Parkinson & Nige Pogson, Nigel Griffiths & Jack Hardisty and Mark Lawlor & Tim Forward.

A fine end to a fine day.

A - Team Match Reports:

The A Team have played 2 matches so far - Saturday 14th April v Brean (Away) and Saturday 28th April v Wedmore (Away).

Brean result - match halved 2 1/2 each.

The first fixture (Brean) was played in difficult conditions with rain and gusting winds. The team has not had the best of starts in previous years and we went with the view that a 3-2 loss taking 6 points from the match would be a better than usual start. The team battled for every point with two matches going to the last green, one being halved and one lost. We won 2 of the 3 remaining matches and ended up with an overall draw, gaining 8 1/2 points for the away fixture. A fantastic result.

Wedmore result - match won 4 / 1.

The team travelled to Wedmore off the back of the great Brean result with high hopes of avenging last years drubbing. At one point things were very close with one match lost and one won and the other 3 games in the balance. A fighting finish over the last few holes saw the remaining matches finish 2 and 1, 2 up and the last match winning on the 18th. A great team performance gave us a 4 / 1 win and 14 points, putting us in a strong position at this early stage in the season.  

My thanks to everyone who played in both fixtures. We can all take great pride from the results and our performance, which I feel sure has been helped by Andrew's Tuesday nights coaching, patience and encouragement of our very motley crew!!

 Avalon League Match Report

League Match:        Long Sutton “B” v Long Sutton “C”

The third match of the season for both sides took place on 28^th April, with Long Sutton “B” side hosting Long Sutton “C” for the return match.

The match ended in a draw which was a good result for the “C” team, but no so good for the “B” side, with the “C” side claiming 8 ½ points to the “B” team 6 points, leaving the “B” team only marginal victors for the season claiming 17 points to the “C” teams 12 ½ .  

It was not a good day however for either Captain, both losing their matches heavily to their opposition.

‘’Game two for LSGCs ‘C’ team saw us up against Taunton Vale ‘B’ who, because of a Club outing to Wales , fielded a somewhat weakened line up.

Nevertheless we can play only what is put before us and in surprisingly friendly weather, despite the dire forecast, the team prevailed with a 3 ½ to 1 ½ win.

Wins were secured by the pairings of Geoff Monks/Chris Norton, Dave Baker/Jordan Taylor and Rob Ford/Jack Hardisty, with Capt Mark Lawlor and Nick Goodliff halving their contest. Apologies Nick for putting you through the wringer with my 3 putting.

A welcome win, a welcome 9 points and a keen appetite for our next match, LSGC ‘B’ team at their place!

Thanks to Graham / Tommy, for the bespoke arrangements, and the staff at the Crown Inn, for providing the post match dinner. Enjoyed by all. Graham even blagged dessert.‘’

''The season opener once again pitted the C and B teams against each other. And once again the match was keenly contested.
With away wins for (B) Captain Rich Barton / Steve Dobson and Norman Banfield / Ian Watts being cancelled out by home wins for John Evans / Dave Baker and (C) Captain Mark Lawlor / Nick Goodliff the match hung on the final game. A game that went to the last green, last putt with Sean Bennett and Andy Coward prevailing. A result settling the final points 11 to 4 in the favour of the B team. Congratulations to Richard and his team. And a huge thank you to my C team players for their sterling efforts. The final points do not reflect the truly close contest.

Undeterred, my team and I look forward to our next fixture. Home to Taunton Vale 21st April''.

 League Match:        Long Sutton “C” v Long Sutton “B”

The first match of the Avalon League season took place on 7^th April, with Long Sutton “C” side hosting Long Sutton “B” as the opening match for both sides.

The “B” side were the victors of the day, winning 3 games to 2 & claiming 11 points to 4 as they were the away side. Matches were in the most fairly close, but what would be expected with both sides on their home course.
