Club Captain's Welcome
Long Sutton Club Captain 2018 John Paterson
Welcome to all, members, visiting golfers and anyone paying a social visit to Long Sutton Golf Club.
The Club proprietors are Graham and Felicity Holloway who still maintain a keen interest in the club assisted primarily by our recently appointed Club Manager, Paul Deeprose and our PGA professional, Andrew Hayes.
I started playing golf in 1998 at Taunton Vale Golf Club where I went on to be Club Captain and then served as Handicap/Competition Chairman for 4 years until the club closed in 2014. After joining Long Sutton I served on the SGU Executive Committee and went on to chair the Somerset Golf Development Group. When Taunton Vale closed, my wife Carole and I were very uncertain of where we should continue our golf. We decided to look at Long Sutton, even though I didn’t at the time consider it one of my favourite courses. On arrival, by chance, we met Graham and Felicity and were made to feel most welcome. Felicity took Carole to show her around while Graham and I chatted until they came back armed with membership forms which were duly filled in and signed. I can honestly say I have not regretted our decision, I’ve even grown to enjoy the course now that I’ve got a better idea of how to play it. The staff and the members have made us, and the many other ex Taunton Vale members who joined, most welcome and for that, I sincerely thank you all.
At 27 years old, Long Sutton is a relatively young club but, particularly over the last few years, has matured beautifully into a quality golf course and provides an excellent test for golfers of all abilities. Water features on 2 holes and the strategically placed drainage ditches makes sure that your course management needs to be spot on. The course is laid out so that you return to the Clubhouse after playing 9, 15 or 18 holes and there are no Winter tees or greens.
We have very active Ladies and Seniors sections ably captained by Mandy Head and Jon Searl respectively and together with our men we total over 500 members. Aside from the Seniors and Ladies midweek competitions we also accommodate our other 5 day members with qualifying competitions on many Fridays.
If you are competitive, there are many individual and team competitions run throughout the year plus 3 Avalon League and a Three Counties team. The Ladies and Seniors also have their own league teams with the Ladies winning their division in 2017.
Throughout the Summer months Wednesday night is Club Night, a great opportunity for new and existing members to come together and join in some fun competitions over 9 holes. There are different competition formats each week and to top it all our chef puts on a very reasonably priced Club Night menu. My Captain’s Day will be on 23rd June where I hope you can all join in what I intend to be an entertaining day and evening.
Our club charity is St Margaret’s Hospice and this year sees the 25th anniversary of our support. The St Margaret’s Hospice Charity Day in 2018 is on 13th July but I will be looking at many other ways to raise additional money for this most worthy charity throughout the year.
I’m sure that all new and existing members, visiting golfers and social visitors will enjoy the Long Sutton hospitality. If you want to seek me out I would be delighted to sit and have a chat, mine’s a Merlot by the way.
