Report on the Winter Salver, 18.2.12
Report on the Winter Salver at Folke 18.2.12
I now know why I found it so hard to raise a team for this game...You all looked at the forecast!
It started off bright enough and I thought this looks a lovely course. You can see for miles in all directions...hardly any trees, and in the summer it will be beautiful but today, no trees, no protection from that cutting wind. Once the weather closed in, so did the golf! I actually parred the first hole, when the sun was shining, but the second time around, a different story. Some of the team managed to get in before the worst of it but some of us had freezing cold stair rods in our faces one way and down the back of the neck the other. Oh the joys of winter golf! Angela and Dave weren't silly when they chose to play a poker championship in the warm instead of golf! We missed Cameron too. He was injured in rugby training, but thanks to Dave Edwards who cheerfully gave it a go. One good thing about playing when it's cold is coming back into the warm. Folke gave us a really warm welcome and the chat and joshing got louder and louder.
As ever, thank you to all who gave their support and played. We brought in some good scores...up into the 30's... but still not as good as the other teams' totals. It all now rests on the last match at the end of March when we play Wincanton, Yeovil and Folke at Long Sutton.
The unconfirmed results today were -
Folke 319 Total to date 944
Wincanton 312 936
Yeovil 293 914
Long Sutton 280 855
Anyone interested in playing on Sunday, 25th March at 11.30 please sign the sheet in the corridor.
If you know of anyone playing beautifully to their handicap, push them my way... I've got a job for them.

(Still not warm!)
Report on Night Golf......!!
Report on Night Golf
15th February, 2012
...It was fun! Agreed, the weather helped. No frost, no rain, a warm wind (for February!) and the stars were amazing.
The fun and games started before we were ever out on the course...the balls. “Who's got them? Has someone taken my team's yet?” Panic. “I've got to get to the 18th !” Note for next time...hand balls out with card and allow more time to reach tees!
All about to start. Ray (it would be Ray!) held up in traffic at Cartgate...I tell him he's off the 2nd. Deliberate sabotage? No. At least, not deliberately deliberate. Andrew puts him right...”You're off 16 because we guessed you'd be late!” Now let me see, Ray had a trolley but he does have a sense of direction. Surely he wouldn't forget the right hand bunker on the 2nd? Were they tyre tracks?
As for my team, the question of divots on the ladies' tees...You have to bear in mind Graham was coerced into playing. He did get better quickly, but on the first tee...!! He winced and saw pound notes every time he hit the ground. Luckily we're all a bit deaf and he soon got the hang of it...it's like riding a bike... and his putt dropped on the first hole. Jamie brought along his Chinese driver...we wished he hadn't! His drives curved every which way and only he drove off on the last hole...remember, we did only need one drive each...but again his putter was red hot. Down for 4 on the 16th. Chris was Steady Eddie. Straight down the middle. No trouble.
Confusion as we approached the green on the 3rd. Who's buried the green? What distance is that? Then we found the flag in the hole upside down...we're given to believe it was John Evans, anticipating being in Australia! We put our 7th place down to Graham Load's barracking from behind and his lighthouse lamp destroying our night vision. Why didn't he stick to eating my carrots? But he's so kind hearted...Sandra's knight in shining armour...crawling deep into a hedge to retrieve her ball.
I wonder whether Steve's ball will be found today? Our only loss. We have the light but no ball. We did say not to hit them end on! I see a fine coming on. I was so glad to meet Ray Boulton smiling at the end, still dry...he hadn't fallen in the pond as he'd feared. We all made it back safe and sound...
So yes, it was fun and we will do it again sometime, only better...Lovely to come back in to piping hot food. Thank you to Julie, Fran and the Bar Staff. Our thanks to Graham for letting us run it, for sourcing the kit to keep the costs viable and for stepping in at the last minute as a player. Our thanks to Andrew for his help in pulling it all together and finally, thanks to you all for playing with such good humour.
The results were -
Tom Lowe, Dave Baker, Phil Herriman, David Howell 6.7 28.3
Johnny Tulk, Graham Load, Malcolm Dennes, Angela Baker 5.9 29.1
Steve Stopforth, Pete Burch, John Evans, Marion Boulton 5.9 31.1
Roy Parmiter, Wes Allen, Rob Ford, Julie Taylor 5.6 31.4
Rob Load, Norman Banfield, Malcolm Head, Sandra Ford 5.1 31.9
Jordan Taylor, Nigel Griffiths, Ray Edwards, Hilary Dennes 5.8 32.2
Jamie Brodie, Chris Binding, Graham Holloway, Gill Edwards 5.7 32.3
Haydn Gibson, John Drummond, Ray Boulton, Mandy Head 6.1 32.9
Steve Dobson, Chris Slocombe, Roger Barnett, Coleen Herriman 6.8 33.2
...what cost the putts that sat on the edge or just lipped out!

Elvis Night at Long Sutton – What a Night!
Elvis Night – What a Night!
Thank you to all the ladies (and their gents!) who were able to come to Elvis on Saturday.
If you want to know what the evening was like, try saying 'Elvis' to someone like Julie, Angela, the Whiteheads, Carol, Carolyn, the Pains, Tanya and Sean, the Drummonds, Felicity or myself and see what reaction you get...!
I bet it would start with a big intake of breath, the eyes light up and out comes the rush of words..."It was amazing. He was incredible". The beaming smile starts...You should have seen him flirting with Julie, resting his foot on her chair. She wouldn't stroke his leg! So he pulled his scarf off and draped it round her neck! What a girl, she didn't bat an eyelid but played right along. As for those tight, white trousers...oh my goodness Angela! We should have had a table further back.
It's the laughter that stays with you after a night like that. We cheered and laughed when a space was cleared in the middle of the packed dance floor by Kev Pain's breakdancing. That was such a surprise. We know he can hit a golf ball but breakdancing? There were cheers when Fran heard her favourite and just had to rush out to dance her full-on favourite. Andrew Isaac's grandma and auntie were bopping away and loving it. There was constant comedy from the man at the back singing the chorus and miming along with Elvis behind his back. The laughter went on and on!
Talk about a night to remember.

Report on the Winter Salver, 28.1.12
The Three Counties League is certainly taking us to some different golf courses!
On Saturday, 28th January we played at Wincanton...a surreal game of golf...in the middle of the race course; empty stands on one side and rails being erected on the other.
We learnt a lot from the game...what looks green, flat and innocent is really cratered like the moon and waiting to bite you in the proverbial! There may not be trees and ditches to contend with but there are bunkers, wide and evil in front of nearly every green. The rough isn't overly rough but it's certainly tough and we found Saturday tough. But this was meant to be a learning experience ready for next year when we play Wincanton in the League. Then it will be a different matter, and it will be a lovely course to play. The ball should roll for miles and in from the right side of the fairway now we know what to do!
Thanks as ever to all who played and well done Cameron Barrett, our highest scorer.
I'm glossing over the result but will say there's no disgrace in being last if you have done your best!
If there are any gritty miracle-workers out there who would like to play in our next match at Folke on Sat. 18th Feb., especially if you have played Folke before, please sign the sheet in the corridor.

Winter Salver Report
Report on the Winter Salver
For those who don't know, this is a small, separate competition between four clubs from the 3 Counties League...Wincanton, Folke, Yeovil and now ourselves. The aim is to keep in touch through the winter by playing one match on each course, throwing in plenty of banter and food after. The game is full hcp ind. stableford with a team of 12. Your best 10 scores from the 12 on the day count towards the final team score.
Well who said miracles don't happen? We all survived playing the first round this Saturday, 14th Jan. on the Newton Course in freezing conditions. A really big thankyou to everyone who played. Stalwarts! I thought I would never get warm again and Ray was converted. He went straight round the corner to buy some UnderArmour! Special thanks to Gwen and Brian who changed family plans to join the team and another miracle - Steve, who had been at work for hours in the minus conditions, was disastrous off the first tee, stiff with cold, but brought in our highest score of 35 pts. So pleased. All in all we amassed 318 pts against 339, (Yeovil), 334, (Folke), and 308 (Wincanton). Sorry not everyone could be included in this game. Get your name down early if you can play on Saturday, 28th January at Wincanton. It should be a good game.

Captains Drive In ~ 12th November 2011
Captains Drive In
12th November 2011
Click here for full list of results
The day started with the customary Texas Scramble Shot Gun start with over a hundred people taking part, many participated in breakfast before and hit soup and rolls after and a fantastic atmosphere was produced in the clubhouse. In the evening at the Annual Dinner & Dance Captains and guests were entertained by Arnold Gutbucket along with dancing to the energetic LUI. Pictures show Club Captain Chris Binding, Lady Captain Julie Taylor, Seniors Captain Roger Stone and Junior Captain Haydn Gibson standing on the tee prior to their Drive In.
Individual pictures show Julie, Roger and Haydn all in suitable pose, unfortunately Chris had more on his mind at the time and his pose looks like he was more concerned with his forth coming audition for Strictly Come Dancing.
The whole day was a great success and enjoyed by all.
Freeman Trophy ~ Listen carefully to the tale I tell...a tale of wonder and delight!
Freeman Trophy
Listen carefully to the tale I tell...a tale of wonder and delight!
Our team of 12 played steady golf on the Freeman Trophy Day. We came in so hopeful and sat with baited breath, waiting for the result...Second. Oh, no! Bridesmaid again. We smiled politely as Wheathill bounced with joy, but growled inwardly, so disappointed. Now for the magic. Last night at the 3 Counties AGM, Ian Chandler, the Treasurer, announced there had been a mix-up with the checking of the scores...Pardon?...Yes. Too much 'help' on the day meant that when he recounted in the evening, he found Wheathill were no longer the winners. They had dropped to fourth place! Long Sutton were no longer second, they had risen to FIRST! Felicity, Graham and myself definitely said "I don't believe it!", but see for yourselves. The Freeman Trophy is proudly sitting at Long Sutton. We were not the bridesmaid that day after all. Really well done Vanessa Watts, Graham Holloway, Stacie Watts, Haydn Gibson, Pam Frith, Nigel Brighouse, Angela and Dave Baker, Hilary and Malcolm Dennes and Ray Edwards and wife!

3 Counties Freeman Trophy
3 Counties Freeman Trophy
Long Sutton was successful in it's bid to host the 3 Counties Freeman Trophy for the second successive year, so on Saturday, 8th October, Long Sutton was looking its best for the 120 visitors from the 10 clubs involved in the 3 Counties League. When the first competitors arrived in the early morning gloom, the weather had a definite feel of 'winter on the way', but the 3 Counties players are all a cheerful bunch and were determined to enjoy the day, come what may. You have to be made of strong stuff though, when as one of the first off the tee, in front of everyone, your ball curves out of bounds... closely followed by your 3 off the tee! Oh, nightmare. Poor man. A clamour of cheers and jeers went up but someone quipped "It's that new bag that's doing it! Ditch the bag!" and he went off with a smile on his face. Overall, this is the good-natured feel of the 3 Counties League and the day followed the same pattern. In the end, Wheathill's strong B team won the Freeman Trophy, with Long Sutton second.
The end of season cups were presented...
Long Sutton won the Div. 2 Reserve Cup and received the Runners-Up Shield for Div. 2. The trophies are now on display in the clubhouse. We now move up to Div. 1 for next season. A good start to life in the 3 Counties. There was high praise for the course, the meal and the welcome Long Sutton gave...More than one person said "I always love playing here".
Thank you, too, to the 3 Counties for inviting our Lady Captain to run a putting competition on the day. Alec's devilllish longest putt certainly added to the fun. Thank you to him and sorry if hilarity on the green put off players on the 16th tee! Eliza and her helpers thank all who helped to raise over £170 for the Alzheimer Society.
Finally, the draw was made for the Winter Knockout. In the preliminary round, Wheathill B are paired with Long Sutton to play on a neutral course. An exciting start to the next stage of our first year in the League. The venue will probably be the Newton Course but only if we can play in dry weather this time! Watch out for the sign-up sheet once the date is arranged.
Another target!

3 Counties - end of season finale!
3 Counties
Well done and thank you to all who played in our first season. What an experience...different courses, sometimes even different rules (!) and out of our comfort zone but always friendly and a laugh.
Thank you everyone for making it such fun and for bringing Long Sutton success. As a result of being 2nd in Div. 2 we move up to Div. 1 next season
and
our Reserve Pairs have done us proud. "We are the Winners"...and Long Sutton's name will be engraved on the cup this year. Vanessa and Roy clinched the win in an exciting last game but thanks to everyone who contributed and special thanks to Cameron and James, our two juniors, who had an amazing win against the previously unbeaten Charminster Reserve Pair!
The fun doesn't end here though...See the notice on the board about the Freeman Trophy, Sat. 8th October.
This is the end of season Jamboree. We need a team of 12 to compete for the Trophy and other prizes. At the meal Cups will be presented and the Draw will be made, football style, for the 3 Counties Winter Knockout.
Don't miss the fun. Will we draw Bullpits!?! I almost hope so. Get our own back.
Sign up quickly!

Mixed Friendly v Wedmore result
The last of our matches for this year was away to Wedmore. I’m pleased to report a Long Sutton win 4 matches to 3 on a very blustery and showery day! Well done to all taking part and a huge thank you to everyone who has played in and supported the mixed matches throughout the year.
Vanessa
We need 6 points to win 3 Counties Div.2!!
|
Final game v Wheathill B
We need 6 points to win. If the reserve is a tie it's worked out on who has the greatest margin from all the individual games, so James' and Cameron's 5 and 4 stands us in good stead! We do need a strong reserve pair then. It's a Must Win situation! |

Redwood Cup
Mixed Friendly v Weymouth
Unfortunately Long Sutton lost a very close run mixed friendly on Sunday 4-3, with most of our pairs giving shots. However the day was enjoyed by all and the Weymouth visitors left having commented on how incredibly impressed they were with the course - some had not played it for several years remarked on the improvement and changes and how good it all looked. The weather for fortunately lovely, if a little breezy, and the views around were stunning. One lady particularly who came to the recent Ladies Open and got a soaking remarked how pleased she was to have come back and been able to see the course and club at its best. A day when everyone was very happy to be outside and enjoying their surroundings. The day was rounded off with a lovely dinner and our visitors went away very happy. That’s what friendlies are all about.
Our next match is this coming Sunday (11th) v Bridport (away). Sheets are on the board.

Long Sutton Team win Open Texas Scramble
Last Week on Friday 19th August there was an Open Texas Scramble Event at Wells Golf Club. 35 plus teams took part on a beautiful day and the conditions was very suitable for all the golfers.
The team consisting of Steve Stopforth, Haydn Gibson, Ashley Gibson and Rupert Edwards went to this event looking to win the event representing Long Sutton and they did the club proud as they had a shot difference of 3.5. They had a great team start being 3 under par after 5 holes and with everyone playing brilliantly round the course continued making birdies and some cracking shots we ended up shooting a nett 55.5 and in a very strong position as we was the last couple of groups teeing off. And eventually we found out we had won the event overall out of all the visiting teams and home teams and it was a very comfortable win for us as we won the event by a margin of 2.6 in the end to our closest opponent so well deserved victory for the lads from Long Sutton
So congrats to Steve, Haydn, Ashley and Rupert for winning last Friday.
3 Counties League – Bullpits Away 20.8.11
3 Counties League – Bullpits Away 20.8.11
Thank you to the team who played like drowned rats at Bullpits on Saturday. It didn't take many holes to feel we were sacrificial lambs! If you think you are a reasonable golfer, please play their course. You may have to rethink. Imagine holes of a large pitch and putt length, set in a maze of ancient trees and bushes in the foothills of a swiss mountain, with so much water oozing from natural springs that even now it is boggy underfoot, with water channelled down to leats which look like Tiverton's canal, and you have some idea of how we mere mortals suffered.
Exceptionally pretty and exceptionally difficult. We lost, yes, but did get 6 points from Steve, Rupert, Kath and Brian. Thank you though to everyone for all their efforts and cheerfulness on such a difficult day.

HOLE IN ONE FOR NEW MEMBER!
HOLE IN ONE FOR NEW MEMBER!
Jon Searl joined Long Sutton Golf Club on 4 July and has already achieved a Hole In One.
On Saturday afternoon I had the pleasure of witnessing an amazing Hole In One on the 9th.
That in itself was amazing, his first ever Hole In One, but Jon also had a round of a life time. Playing off 17 he scored an incredible nett 60.
His elation was an understatement! I think as we came off at the 18th I even saw a tear in his eye. We had the honour of sharing his victory in the bar of the Clubhouse afterwards.
Congratulations Jon!

Chairman’s Mid Summer Report
Chairman’s Mid Summer Report
It’s raining outside as I write this report so it must be mid-summer!
A few weeks ago everything looked rosy for the Avalon League B team who looked to be walking away with Division 5, unfortunately the petals have fallen off recently and it looks like another season in this division. The Avalon A side have not had a good season so far although things may have turned the corner with an away win at Taunton Vale last week. The C side have used many players giving them a taste of league golf and what it entails. After the success in last year’s Somerset Bowl on reaching the final, we all had high hopes of going one better this year unfortunately we lost last Friday at Oake Manor to Wheathill in the quarter final. All that is left to play for at county level is a Pickeridge Bowl quarter final match against Mendip at Taunton Vale in a couple of weeks time.
The success of the year so far has been Gill Edwards and her assortment of players who have turned out in the Three Counties League and are at present sitting second to top of their division with 2 games in hand. On a personal note it is good to see George and Margaret Bennett taking part in this team for without them the club would not exist today.
The Seniors Section is going from strength to strength and we wish them well in their quest to win the Seniors Bowl: they have also just run a very successful championship and evening presentation evening which was enjoyed by all.
The Ladies Section still continues to thrive and they too have held some very well supported Open events during the season.
Juniors are re-building but things seem to be getting there with some good individual results being recorded. Stacie Watts continues her success with County Girls and is looking forward to taking part in the 3 day SW Intercounties Jamboree at Honiton.
The St Margaret’s Hospice Day was another great success with so many people from within and outside the club taking part and supporting the day. I keep getting asked how much have we made this year: it takes time to collect all the money in and pay any outstanding bills, but it looks like we shall be around what we achieved last year of £19,500 so watch this space for the final total.
Sean Monaghan has carved and donated the wonderful Golf Ball sculpture on the 5th hole: our thanks to him for giving our club such a wonderful feature.
People from all around are coming to play our course and commenting on the way it has improved and developed: it is a great credit to our green keeping staff and also to Graham & Felicity for the funding towards these improvements.
Keep enjoying your golf and let’s keep Long Sutton the friendly welcoming club it has grown to by reputation.

The 5th Pond Sculpture
The 5th Pond Sculpture
Sean Monaghan stone mason, keen golfer and Long Sutton member has, as a pastime for the last 5 years, been carefully sculpturing the new golf ball that is now in place in the 5th pond. Sean has kindly donated the sculptured ball to your club.
The ball is naturally coloured stone similar to Portland Stone but is in fact sculptured out of Anstrude Roche Claire (Oolitic limestone, Middle Jurassic, Bathonian stratum) which is quarried in Bierry-les-Belles-Fontaines, France. The tee and base are hamstone (a Jurassic limestone from the Toarcian, or Upper Lias, stage) from Ham Hill, Somerset
As a point of interest ~ In 2000 Anstrude Roche Claire was used instead of Portland stone for the new Ionic portico, the main gateway to the courtyard at the British Museum causing a major controversy.
A thirty tonne crane was bought in to lift into the pond a two tonne block of concrete (cast by the green keeping staff) onto which the Hamstone base, tee and ball were placed. The ball and tee are secured to the base with a stainless steel rod.

Anyone at a loose end this Sat. p.m. 9th July and interested in taking part in one of these "fun" matches, step forward!
It should be a good game at home against a Wheathill team.

You do not need to sign up as a pair. We will match you up.

Thank you and well done to everyone who played against Yeovil in the 3 Counties Match on Sat. 11th June at Home.
A really good win. The team ranged from Venerable/Golf Savvy to Junior/Keen as Mustard and all shades in between!
We had a really good day.
There are 3 games coming up in quick succession...

Sign up sheets are on the Boards. Do put your names up.

We need YOU
The 3 Counties League has started with an Away win at Charminster.
Next match SOON.
At Home on Saturday, 11th June, 1st tee 1.06.
We need YOU to sign up for this game... It is a very relaxed League where we can play any mix of men, ladies and juniors. Active hcps only and a max. of 24 (after adjustment shots for the ladies). 4BBB matchplay. £10 match fee, including food.
Naturally, we want to accumulate as many points as we can, but the main aim is for us to meet some new people, hopefully play some good golf and have fun doing it! Give it a try. The sign-up sheet is in the corridor.

3 COUNTIES LEAGUE - Charminster
3 COUNTIES LEAGUE - Charminster
A big “thankyou” to the team who played in our first match at Charminster on 21st May. The result was a win 3 and 2 to Long Sutton and a win in the Reserve Cup. Unfortunately, the course was not flat as I had told Kath...photos can be very misleading! But all made it up and down the cardiac arrest hills safely, to collapse in the clubhouse, or the boot of the car first, in one instance, before facing more cardiac arrest ammunition...a Full Breakfast and liquid refreshment at teatime! All great fun. The Charminster players were totally friendly, albeit slightly bemused, as they only have one lady member at their club and we arrived with seven!
Next match at home against Yeovil, Saturday, 11th June. Look out for the sign-up sheet in the corridor. We need 12 people in total, men, ladies, juniors, but with active handicaps. Max. hcp 24.
4BBB matchplay.
Gill
Mixed Friendly - Sunday 5th June - v Bridport. Away.
Mixed Friendly - Sunday 5th June - v Bridport. Away.
The notice is now on the board for our next mixed friendly match. Please add names and handicap information if you would like to play. I am considering mixing our pairings instead of running with the usual format of couples/partners playing together - unless people feel strongly about this of course. I am waiting for confirmation of the costs from Bridport and will add this information to the eventual team list.
These friendlies are a great way to ease yourself into inter-club matches. They are always very relaxed and great fun - plus you get a round of golf and a meal for a bargain amount of money! If you have not played in one before, please do put your name on the list. Unfortunately, I cant play that day, but I'm sure all those who go will have a great day.
Any queries, please contact me on 07841 816841.
Many thanks for your support
Vanessa

Long Sutton won 6 nil, which was great! The food all went off really well and everyone was very complimentary about the course and our hospitality. The weather just made it too. A very good day.

Great turnout for 1st Club Night of 2011
Olly was delighted to see such a good turnout for his 1st Club Night. 59 players turned out and enjoyed a perfect late afternoon of golf.
1st to 4th prizes were awarded in 2 divisions.
Next week is an Individual Competition and A Blind Team Pairs Event.
Hope to see even more of you.
Chairman’s Season Review
With the New Captain’s in place we must not forget all the hard work Digby, Mike and Gill put in last year, and we look forward to what Olly, John and Eliza have to offer.
Last year was a good year for the Men’s section with the A team gaining promotion in the Avalon League and also reaching the semi-final of the Pickeridge Cup, but the highlight for me was the incredible performance to reach the Bowl Final only losing out on the third extra play off hole.
The Seniors have also been performing well at county level with Individuals and teams winning prizes in the County Senior Autumn meeting. Not to be out done our Ladies finished runners up in their League, so a good season by all sections.
There have been many fine individual performances during the year with prizes at all levels being spread across the membership.
The annual St Margaret’s Hospice Day raised a staggering £19,500: congratulations to all who took part and supported this event.
The course continues to improve with work carried out to paths, tees and drainage on going. It is important that we the members realise that we need to support the club both in the bar and pro shop in appreciation of this continued investment by the management.
A notice has been posted about running a driving range target competition and it is hoped to get this up and running after Christmas.
Socially there are still some places available at the Christmas Cabaret Dinner which is to be held on Tuesday 21st December. Tickets for Burns Night go on sale 1st December and in February we have a Dinner Cabaret night with Barry Paul alias Elvis.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the members of the club for there ongoing support and wish you all a happy Christmas and New Year and lets make next year the best ever for this club.

Captains Drive In
Captains' Drive In - Saturday 13th November
The day dawned - was it dry or was it wet? - luckily despite the past few days the weather was fine and the course in good condition. The day is designed as a fun day with the competition being a Texas Scramble and fun it was! A shotgun start with tee times oversubscribed and some tees doubling up. Some men went off the whites, some off the yellows and some of both!! Prizes were awarded accordingly! Did the winning team have inside information?!
Following prizegiving the Captains gathered for their 'Drive In' - some of the Langport Lads obviously didn't have much faith in their captain by where they positioned the antipicapated landing of Olly's drive!
In the evening there was a delicious carvery, a ventriloquist who kept the diners highly amused and to end the day dancing to a glamorous 'Rogue Minogue'.
