Captain’s Day 2015 ~ Report and photos.

Long Sutton Golf Club Captain’s Day 2015 Saturday 13th June 2015 was the date for the annual Captain’s Day at Long Sutton Golf Club. Over 120 people took part in the stableford competition including Ladies and Juniors. The extensive prize table included a prize on each of the 18 holes, Junior, Ladies and men’s prizes with the best lady, man and two juniors receiving engraved trophies to keep. The course was presented in excellent condition and the weather kept fine through the day. The Captain’s Evening took place following the presentations and was well attended by 96 people with entertainment provided by Chris Holmes. The day raised over £600 for the Captain’s charity St Margaret’s Hospice. The Men’s overall winner on the day was Henry Edwards (pictured) with 40 stableford points, and the Ladies’ was Becky Cousins with 41 points. Henry is pictured with his girlfriend Amie, who has recently taken up golf. The Captain, Mike Poole, is pictured with Alec Radwell, who oversaw the longest putt competition, which raised £160 on the day.

Captain’s Round Up

Captain’s Round Up

It is almost 6 months since I took over as Captain at the AGM on 27th October 2014. It seems incredible that the year is half over already and that the best is yet to come. The winter programme has been pretty comprehensive with competitions which have been generally well supported. A highlight for me was the “Boxing Day” team event on 27th December which was attended by 80 players and which I hope will become a regular event on the calendar.

Other winter successes include Long Sutton winning the Three Counties knockout final. Well done to Gill and her team for organising and for the players who have supported her.

Gill has also promoted and organised the 2 night golf events with a number of hardy golfers braving the winter conditions in the pitch black to watch their balls shoot off down the fairways like tracer fire (well sort of !).

The Avalon League Captains, George, Hughie and Rob, organised a couple of team building events to kick off the league season. 48 people took part in the first of these with the “left” team taking the honours. The second event was followed up with a meal provided by Graham and Felicity. The first B team match (captain Hughie) took place on 14th March at Wells with Long Sutton forcing a draw to come out ahead on away points. A good start lads well done.

The Seniors own version of the Ryder Cup, “The Dryer Cup”, was also well supported with over 51 players taking part in the series. The overall result was a victory for “Europe”, which in normal circumstances would be considered an excellent result, unless you are playing for the “USA” of course.

Socially, the Burn’s Night was a great night out and is to be commended for future years, and of course the Curry nights and Italian evenings continue to be sell out events.

As part of the Captain’s duties I have attended the SGU Annual Dinner, the SGU AGM , where I was proud to see our chairman, Tommy Tulk installed as SGU President for the next two years; and the Somerset Past Captain’s Annual Dinner, which as you might imagine was a very “merry” affair.

Behind the scenes your Captains and their committees have been planning the Summer programmes, and the Open Competitions, and additionally this year your Vice Captain, John Williams, is masterminding the Jubillee celebration programme for 2016.

Over the winter we have been fortunate thus far with the weather and already the course is starting to regain its definition as the mowers come out and the preparation for the season commences. Graham and Felicity have been working hard with the planners to get the necessary permissions to start work on the bunds. Once this is achieved this will be the main club priority for this year together with further work on the buggy paths.

I am looking forward to the Club Night starting on the 8th April and you will have noted that there is a Club Night warm up session planned for the 1st April which will be followed by a Rules Evening to give everyone a chance to brush up on their knowledge before the season proper starts, I do hope as many of you as possible will be able to take advantage of this event.

Another date which I hope you will have in your calendar is June 13th; this is my Captain’s Day this year. The format will be a competition in the morning, followed by a presentation of the prizes, and finishing off with a dinner and entertainment in the evening. I shall be publishing more details in the near future so keep an eye on the notice boards, and I shall look forward to as many of you as possible taking part during the day and celebrating during the evening.
