I can’t believe how quickly this year has gone & how much I’ve enjoyed being Ladies Captain! I was nervous about taking on the role but I needn’t have worried – everyone has been wonderfully supportive & it has been an enormous pleasure & one of the best experiences of my life.
We have welcomed some new lady members this year & they have taken part in our busy calendar of events. We have a friendly, happy & busy ladies section of which we can all feel justly proud. We have run very successful Mixed & Ladies Open’s this season. We won 7 out of 9 Ladies Friendlies, adding Wheathill & Enmore Park to our fixtures this year. We won 4 out of 6 Mixed Friendlies & against all the odds won our last game away at Bath to come 3rd by one point in the Inter-Club League & remain in Division 1 next year. Bronze ladies who signed up for the first time did extremely well. The ladies have helped raise the profile of Long Sutton winning prizes in County & Open events in the West Country this season. A highlight for our Seniors was winning the County Shield, awarded to the club with the best results in Seniors medal & stableford competitions during the year.
Well done to our Junior girl, Stacie Watts who won the James Cup for the most improved player, reducing her handicap this season from 23 to 16. Stacie is a valued member of the County Junior Squad & amongst other successes was awarded the Somerset Golf Girls Order of Merit this year.
The ladies enjoyed an Away Day at Enmore Park & Away Overnighter at Highbullen Golf & Country Club this autumn. We were blessed on both occasions with glorious weather & had a fantastic time on & off the course on both occasions.
I want to thank Julie who has been a brilliant Vice Captain. She has enthusiastically taken on many responsibilities during the year and has also successfully encouraged Wheathill to join Long Sutton & Windwhistle in the Trimatch next year. She has made my captaincy easier & we’ve had great fun working together & I wish her all the very best for the coming year.
My Committee also deserve huge thanks; they have given their time, advice & help in so many ways. Sadly we are losing our Secretary Chris Jowett. I would like to thank her for all the work she has done over the last few years.
Thanks to everyone’s generosity we have raised an amazing £2100.00 for my charity, the Alzheimer’s Society, this year, plus additional funds from the collection pots in the club. I’m absolutely delighted with the sum raised.
The Ladies helped raise part of the incredible total of £22,000.00 on Hospice Day running the 14th hole fundraisers & the tombola from early morning until late in the evening.
Our game with the Seniors in the Joint Charity match & friendly rivalry against them in the Redwood Cup were a highlight again – I think you all know by now that the Seniors ran away with the cup this year! I want to thank John Williams & Roger Stone for their help & support organising these events. Huge thanks to Alex Radwell who has been an amazing support to me & the ladies this year helping with event results & putting competitions. I had great pleasure in awarding Alex my Captain’s Challenge Spoon this year.
Thanks also to Alex Kersey-Brown who has cheerfully embraced my role as captain & also helped me in many events this year.
Our course has improved so much & is making an excellent name for itself due to the hard work of Graham & the green keepers for which we thank you all. I would also like to thank Felicity for all her help with team clothing & to her & Kate for their help & support scheduling our busy calendar of events. To George & Roger & the kitchen staff for their delicious meals (& banter!) & the bar staff who have looked after us so efficiently & cheerfully all year. To Andrew for his coaching & rules session & all the Pro Shop staff for their assistance. We have all now absorbed the online booking system & the club website has proved extremely successful keeping us in touch with events on & off the course.
I would like to wish everyone the very best for the 2012 season.
