Gourmet Evening - superb!!
Dawn to Dusk Challenge!!
Dawn to Dusk Challenge:
4.30 AM on Monday 25th June saw the start of Mark Healey’s dawn to dusk sponsored golf challenge, raising money for the Captain’s charity. By the time dusk set much, much later in the day, Mark had completed 108 holes – an incredible achievement. And he carried all the way! He was accompanied and encouraged by a number of members during the day, including Andy Moray (who bravely started with him at 4.30 in the morning (18 holes)), Andrew Hayes (22 holes), Douglas Bartys, Simon Green (18 holes) and Adrian Nutland (12 holes), George Ceely (27 holes), Vanessa Hayes (18 holes) and Jamie Brodie (9 holes). Thanks to all those who sponsored Mark, those who played alongside him and also to the players who kindly let him through their games during the day.
From current figures, Mark expects to raise around £700, but hopes this will go up over the next few weeks. If you would like to support Mark’s achievement but missed the sponsorship forms, donations will be gratefully received in the Pro-shop or at the bar.
Report on Shotgun Start, Bank Holiday Monday – The Dream Team does it again!
Report on Shotgun Start, Bank Holiday Monday – The Dream Team does it again!
Thank you and well played to all those who left their warm beds at 5 a.m. to wait for the 6.30 klaxon, signalling the start of the Bank Holiday Monday Texas Scramble – Muddle may have been a better word! Many apologies to those who had to invent their route – the board still showed 16 zigzag holes open, wheareas most of us knew we were playing a straight 18, including up the 10th, (over the high tide mark), and down the 5th. A bird's eye view would have been hilarious, but not so funny for those involved in the Scramble!
Tommy blew the klaxon slightly later than 6.30, as not everyone's alarm had gone off as planned. How about waking at 10 past 6 and you live in Somerton? Well-scrambled Gwen and Brian and a good job Graham's bed is near the 1st tee! So many keys to sort out.
It wasn't the glorious dawn that I had hoped – the pink glow was from my red umbrella, not the sunrise – but I still thoroughly enjoyed it. We saw the hare race across the 6th and a sparrow hawk swooped into a tree, wings wide, right in front of us on the 15th. These things are a privilege.
We were all more than ready for the wonderful breakfast and the results.
1st: Well done the Dream Team – Graham (shoelaces finally tied) Holloway, Phil Ross,
Mike Veale, Neil Hewitson.
2nd: Sarah and Steve Uzell, Sandra Basford and Sean Monaghan – (Now thank me for persuading you to play).
3rd: Roy Parmiter, Geoff Monks, Chris Norton, Gavin Baker.
Thank you to Graham for allowing us to run the event and to everyone who helped make it happen.

SENIORS AND LADY CAPTAINS CHARITY DAY 2012
SENIORS AND LADY CAPTAINS CHARITY DAY 2012
Thursday 12th April started with a very light frost, which quickly dispersed, to leave a beautiful sunny day for so early in the season.
This year the following three charities were supported.
- 1. Breakthrough Breast Cancer
- 2. Charlton Farm Children’s Hospice
- 3. Prostate Cancer
64 mixed pairs, played a Greensome Stableford competition , with some very competitive golf being achieved.
The Seniors Captain and Ladies Captain led the field with their respective partners, and set the pace. Observing the remaining players as they made their way around the course it was obvious that everybody seemed to be enjoying the day, even if the golf was not quite up to expectations!
Early leaders were Roger Stone and Morag Owen Burke with a score of 43 points, and as other scores came in, their score looked to be hard to beat. Mick Capps and Mary Marshall came in with a commendable 40 points, but were then overtaken by David Howell and Connie Stolworthy who had the same score but with a better back nine. It was left for the last fourball to come in, with Jeremy Evans and Sally Taylor’s equalling score of 43 points with a better back nine by one point to knock Roger and Morag off the perch.
Results:
1st Jeremy Evans and Sally Taylor 43 pts on countback
2nd Roger Stone and Morag Owen – Burke 43 pts
3rd David Howell and Connie Stolworthy 40 pts
Nearest the Pin 7th - Ruth Lloyd and Chris Gingell
Nearest the Pin 17th - Jeremy Evans and Sally Taylor
Two Spots - Malcolm Dennes and Sarah Uzzell, John Cousins and Penny Campbell, Quinney Lawrence and John Packett, Jeremy Evans and Sally Taylor.
During the delicious and plentiful buffet meal (thanks to George & staff), talks were given on behalf of all three Charities. A 'heads & tails' game was played and a Raffle followed the meal.
Thanks to generosity of members on the day £382.24p was raised and will be shared between the Senior and Lady Captains' charities.
Thank you all for supporting this event.
Roger & Julie
CHAIRMAN’S SPRING NEWSLETTER
CHAIRMAN’S SPRING NEWSLETTER
The sun is shining hard down on us at the moment, but bewares the county cricket season starts next week and that usually means rain, something we all need.
Roy Parmiter starts his year off on Monday as Somerset Captain of Captains, on behalf of the club we congratulate him and wish him well in his year in office.
The winter competitions have run reasonably well but it is important that all parties adhere to the dates for these competitions to function properly.
George, Richard, Mark and Gill are all ready to lead their teams out to do battle in the Avalon and Three Counties leagues: Roger and Julie have already started their seniors and ladies fixture with mixed fortunes.
Curry Nights will continue during the summer months and Club Night starts on the 11th April, do come along and have a game with Club Captain Chris Binding who is looking forward to meeting and playing with as many of you as he can during the season.
The Avalon league captains will be posting their team selections and results on the website for all to see and support.
Richard Dore has started taking teams for St Margaret’s Hospice Charity Day so not to be disappointed I would suggest you contact him and get entered as I believe we have already received 30 teams in a very short time. To try to speed the day up we are looking for more help on the day with marshalling so anyone interested please contact myself or Richard for further information.
The Green Staff have been working hard throughout the winter months and the effects of injecting compressed air into some of the wetter greens is certainly working. Graham has been busy funding new equipment for use on the course and new purchases include a new greens mower (yet to arrive), an overseeder, another pump to keep the rain away and we will soon have some new buggies.
Talking to most golfers speed on the course is always a problem especially with visitors who are unaware of the layout of a strange course so may I appeal to you to be courteous to others at all times and please, if you are looking for a ball or it is bottling up behind you, invite people to play through.
Enjoy Your Golf

Report on Night Golf......!!
Report on Night Golf
15th February, 2012
...It was fun! Agreed, the weather helped. No frost, no rain, a warm wind (for February!) and the stars were amazing.
The fun and games started before we were ever out on the course...the balls. “Who's got them? Has someone taken my team's yet?” Panic. “I've got to get to the 18th !” Note for next time...hand balls out with card and allow more time to reach tees!
All about to start. Ray (it would be Ray!) held up in traffic at Cartgate...I tell him he's off the 2nd. Deliberate sabotage? No. At least, not deliberately deliberate. Andrew puts him right...”You're off 16 because we guessed you'd be late!” Now let me see, Ray had a trolley but he does have a sense of direction. Surely he wouldn't forget the right hand bunker on the 2nd? Were they tyre tracks?
As for my team, the question of divots on the ladies' tees...You have to bear in mind Graham was coerced into playing. He did get better quickly, but on the first tee...!! He winced and saw pound notes every time he hit the ground. Luckily we're all a bit deaf and he soon got the hang of it...it's like riding a bike... and his putt dropped on the first hole. Jamie brought along his Chinese driver...we wished he hadn't! His drives curved every which way and only he drove off on the last hole...remember, we did only need one drive each...but again his putter was red hot. Down for 4 on the 16th. Chris was Steady Eddie. Straight down the middle. No trouble.
Confusion as we approached the green on the 3rd. Who's buried the green? What distance is that? Then we found the flag in the hole upside down...we're given to believe it was John Evans, anticipating being in Australia! We put our 7th place down to Graham Load's barracking from behind and his lighthouse lamp destroying our night vision. Why didn't he stick to eating my carrots? But he's so kind hearted...Sandra's knight in shining armour...crawling deep into a hedge to retrieve her ball.
I wonder whether Steve's ball will be found today? Our only loss. We have the light but no ball. We did say not to hit them end on! I see a fine coming on. I was so glad to meet Ray Boulton smiling at the end, still dry...he hadn't fallen in the pond as he'd feared. We all made it back safe and sound...
So yes, it was fun and we will do it again sometime, only better...Lovely to come back in to piping hot food. Thank you to Julie, Fran and the Bar Staff. Our thanks to Graham for letting us run it, for sourcing the kit to keep the costs viable and for stepping in at the last minute as a player. Our thanks to Andrew for his help in pulling it all together and finally, thanks to you all for playing with such good humour.
The results were -
Tom Lowe, Dave Baker, Phil Herriman, David Howell 6.7 28.3
Johnny Tulk, Graham Load, Malcolm Dennes, Angela Baker 5.9 29.1
Steve Stopforth, Pete Burch, John Evans, Marion Boulton 5.9 31.1
Roy Parmiter, Wes Allen, Rob Ford, Julie Taylor 5.6 31.4
Rob Load, Norman Banfield, Malcolm Head, Sandra Ford 5.1 31.9
Jordan Taylor, Nigel Griffiths, Ray Edwards, Hilary Dennes 5.8 32.2
Jamie Brodie, Chris Binding, Graham Holloway, Gill Edwards 5.7 32.3
Haydn Gibson, John Drummond, Ray Boulton, Mandy Head 6.1 32.9
Steve Dobson, Chris Slocombe, Roger Barnett, Coleen Herriman 6.8 33.2

Elvis Night at Long Sutton – What a Night!
Elvis Night – What a Night!
Thank you to all the ladies (and their gents!) who were able to come to Elvis on Saturday.
If you want to know what the evening was like, try saying 'Elvis' to someone like Julie, Angela, the Whiteheads, Carol, Carolyn, the Pains, Tanya and Sean, the Drummonds, Felicity or myself and see what reaction you get...!
I bet it would start with a big intake of breath, the eyes light up and out comes the rush of words..."It was amazing. He was incredible". The beaming smile starts...You should have seen him flirting with Julie, resting his foot on her chair. She wouldn't stroke his leg! So he pulled his scarf off and draped it round her neck! What a girl, she didn't bat an eyelid but played right along. As for those tight, white trousers...oh my goodness Angela! We should have had a table further back.
It's the laughter that stays with you after a night like that. We cheered and laughed when a space was cleared in the middle of the packed dance floor by Kev Pain's breakdancing. That was such a surprise. We know he can hit a golf ball but breakdancing? There were cheers when Fran heard her favourite and just had to rush out to dance her full-on favourite. Andrew Isaac's grandma and auntie were bopping away and loving it. There was constant comedy from the man at the back singing the chorus and miming along with Elvis behind his back. The laughter went on and on!
Talk about a night to remember.

The day started with the customary Texas Scramble Shot Gun start with over a hundred people taking part, many participated in breakfast before and hit soup and rolls after and a fantastic atmosphere was produced in the clubhouse. In the evening at the Annual Dinner & Dance Captains and guests were entertained by Arnold Gutbucket along with dancing to the energetic LUI. Pictures show Club Captain Chris Binding, Lady Captain Julie Taylor, Seniors Captain Roger Stone and Junior Captain Haydn Gibson standing on the tee prior to their Drive In.
Individual pictures show Julie, Roger and Haydn all in suitable pose, unfortunately Chris had more on his mind at the time and his pose looks like he was more concerned with his forth coming audition for Strictly Come Dancing.
The whole day was a great success and enjoyed by all.

Mixed Friendly v Wedmore result
The last of our matches for this year was away to Wedmore. I’m pleased to report a Long Sutton win 4 matches to 3 on a very blustery and showery day! Well done to all taking part and a huge thank you to everyone who has played in and supported the mixed matches throughout the year.

Redwood Cup
Mixed Friendly v Weymouth
Unfortunately Long Sutton lost a very close run mixed friendly on Sunday 4-3, with most of our pairs giving shots. However the day was enjoyed by all and the Weymouth visitors left having commented on how incredibly impressed they were with the course - some had not played it for several years remarked on the improvement and changes and how good it all looked. The weather for fortunately lovely, if a little breezy, and the views around were stunning. One lady particularly who came to the recent Ladies Open and got a soaking remarked how pleased she was to have come back and been able to see the course and club at its best. A day when everyone was very happy to be outside and enjoying their surroundings. The day was rounded off with a lovely dinner and our visitors went away very happy. That’s what friendlies are all about.
Our next match is this coming Sunday (11th) v Bridport (away). Sheets are on the board.

Long Sutton Team win Open Texas Scramble
Last Week on Friday 19th August there was an Open Texas Scramble Event at Wells Golf Club. 35 plus teams took part on a beautiful day and the conditions was very suitable for all the golfers.
The team consisting of Steve Stopforth, Haydn Gibson, Ashley Gibson and Rupert Edwards went to this event looking to win the event representing Long Sutton and they did the club proud as they had a shot difference of 3.5. They had a great team start being 3 under par after 5 holes and with everyone playing brilliantly round the course continued making birdies and some cracking shots we ended up shooting a nett 55.5 and in a very strong position as we was the last couple of groups teeing off. And eventually we found out we had won the event overall out of all the visiting teams and home teams and it was a very comfortable win for us as we won the event by a margin of 2.6 in the end to our closest opponent so well deserved victory for the lads from Long Sutton
So congrats to Steve, Haydn, Ashley and Rupert for winning last Friday.
HOLE IN ONE FOR NEW MEMBER!
HOLE IN ONE FOR NEW MEMBER!
Jon Searl joined Long Sutton Golf Club on 4 July and has already achieved a Hole In One.
On Saturday afternoon I had the pleasure of witnessing an amazing Hole In One on the 9th.
That in itself was amazing, his first ever Hole In One, but Jon also had a round of a life time. Playing off 17 he scored an incredible nett 60.
His elation was an understatement! I think as we came off at the 18th I even saw a tear in his eye. We had the honour of sharing his victory in the bar of the Clubhouse afterwards.
Congratulations Jon!

Chairman’s Mid Summer Report
Chairman’s Mid Summer Report
It’s raining outside as I write this report so it must be mid-summer!
A few weeks ago everything looked rosy for the Avalon League B team who looked to be walking away with Division 5, unfortunately the petals have fallen off recently and it looks like another season in this division. The Avalon A side have not had a good season so far although things may have turned the corner with an away win at Taunton Vale last week. The C side have used many players giving them a taste of league golf and what it entails. After the success in last year’s Somerset Bowl on reaching the final, we all had high hopes of going one better this year unfortunately we lost last Friday at Oake Manor to Wheathill in the quarter final. All that is left to play for at county level is a Pickeridge Bowl quarter final match against Mendip at Taunton Vale in a couple of weeks time.
The success of the year so far has been Gill Edwards and her assortment of players who have turned out in the Three Counties League and are at present sitting second to top of their division with 2 games in hand. On a personal note it is good to see George and Margaret Bennett taking part in this team for without them the club would not exist today.
The Seniors Section is going from strength to strength and we wish them well in their quest to win the Seniors Bowl: they have also just run a very successful championship and evening presentation evening which was enjoyed by all.
The Ladies Section still continues to thrive and they too have held some very well supported Open events during the season.
Juniors are re-building but things seem to be getting there with some good individual results being recorded. Stacie Watts continues her success with County Girls and is looking forward to taking part in the 3 day SW Intercounties Jamboree at Honiton.
The St Margaret’s Hospice Day was another great success with so many people from within and outside the club taking part and supporting the day. I keep getting asked how much have we made this year: it takes time to collect all the money in and pay any outstanding bills, but it looks like we shall be around what we achieved last year of £19,500 so watch this space for the final total.
Sean Monaghan has carved and donated the wonderful Golf Ball sculpture on the 5th hole: our thanks to him for giving our club such a wonderful feature.
People from all around are coming to play our course and commenting on the way it has improved and developed: it is a great credit to our green keeping staff and also to Graham & Felicity for the funding towards these improvements.
Keep enjoying your golf and let’s keep Long Sutton the friendly welcoming club it has grown to by reputation.

The 5th Pond Sculpture
The 5th Pond Sculpture
Sean Monaghan stone mason, keen golfer and Long Sutton member has, as a pastime for the last 5 years, been carefully sculpturing the new golf ball that is now in place in the 5th pond. Sean has kindly donated the sculptured ball to your club.
The ball is naturally coloured stone similar to Portland Stone but is in fact sculptured out of Anstrude Roche Claire (Oolitic limestone, Middle Jurassic, Bathonian stratum) which is quarried in Bierry-les-Belles-Fontaines, France. The tee and base are hamstone (a Jurassic limestone from the Toarcian, or Upper Lias, stage) from Ham Hill, Somerset
As a point of interest ~ In 2000 Anstrude Roche Claire was used instead of Portland stone for the new Ionic portico, the main gateway to the courtyard at the British Museum causing a major controversy.
A thirty tonne crane was bought in to lift into the pond a two tonne block of concrete (cast by the green keeping staff) onto which the Hamstone base, tee and ball were placed. The ball and tee are secured to the base with a stainless steel rod.

Mixed Friendly - Sunday 5th June - v Bridport. Away.
The notice is now on the board for our next mixed friendly match. Please add names and handicap information if you would like to play. I am considering mixing our pairings instead of running with the usual format of couples/partners playing together - unless people feel strongly about this of course. I am waiting for confirmation of the costs from Bridport and will add this information to the eventual team list.
These friendlies are a great way to ease yourself into inter-club matches. They are always very relaxed and great fun - plus you get a round of golf and a meal for a bargain amount of money! If you have not played in one before, please do put your name on the list. Unfortunately, I cant play that day, but I'm sure all those who go will have a great day.
Any queries, please contact me on 07841 816841.
Many thanks for your support

Great turnout for 1st Club Night of 2011
Olly was delighted to see such a good turnout for his 1st Club Night. 59 players turned out and enjoyed a perfect late afternoon of golf.
1st to 4th prizes were awarded in 2 divisions.
Next week is an Individual Competition and A Blind Team Pairs Event.
Hope to see even more of you.
Chairman’s Season Review
With the New Captain’s in place we must not forget all the hard work Digby, Mike and Gill put in last year, and we look forward to what Olly, John and Eliza have to offer.
Last year was a good year for the Men’s section with the A team gaining promotion in the Avalon League and also reaching the semi-final of the Pickeridge Cup, but the highlight for me was the incredible performance to reach the Bowl Final only losing out on the third extra play off hole.
The Seniors have also been performing well at county level with Individuals and teams winning prizes in the County Senior Autumn meeting. Not to be out done our Ladies finished runners up in their League, so a good season by all sections.
There have been many fine individual performances during the year with prizes at all levels being spread across the membership.
The annual St Margaret’s Hospice Day raised a staggering £19,500: congratulations to all who took part and supported this event.
The course continues to improve with work carried out to paths, tees and drainage on going. It is important that we the members realise that we need to support the club both in the bar and pro shop in appreciation of this continued investment by the management.
A notice has been posted about running a driving range target competition and it is hoped to get this up and running after Christmas.
Socially there are still some places available at the Christmas Cabaret Dinner which is to be held on Tuesday 21st December. Tickets for Burns Night go on sale 1st December and in February we have a Dinner Cabaret night with Barry Paul alias Elvis.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the members of the club for there ongoing support and wish you all a happy Christmas and New Year and lets make next year the best ever for this club.

Captains Drive In
Captains' Drive In - Saturday 13th November
The day dawned - was it dry or was it wet? - luckily despite the past few days the weather was fine and the course in good condition. The day is designed as a fun day with the competition being a Texas Scramble and fun it was! A shotgun start with tee times oversubscribed and some tees doubling up. Some men went off the whites, some off the yellows and some of both!! Prizes were awarded accordingly! Did the winning team have inside information?!
Following prizegiving the Captains gathered for their 'Drive In' - some of the Langport Lads obviously didn't have much faith in their captain by where they positioned the antipicapated landing of Olly's drive!
In the evening there was a delicious carvery, a ventriloquist who kept the diners highly amused and to end the day dancing to a glamorous 'Rogue Minogue'.
