Long Sutton Juniors Representing Somerset Boys and Girls Sides

Long Sutton Juniors Representing Somerset Boys and Girls Sides

Cameron Barrett and Stacie Watts have represented, respectively, Somerset Boys under 14 and Somerset Girls team over the past 2 weeks.

Cameron went to Glamorganshire Golf Club on Sunday 24th June after receiving his first call up for the Under 14 team playing against the Glamorganshire county side. Cameron had very good success in his first match playing in the foursomes and he won his game 4 and 3 playing very well with his playing partner and winning his first point for Somerset under 14s. Then in the afternoon Cameron had a singles match against a very strong 10 handicap player and trading shots over and over they both played some great golf and it was all square on the last.  Both were off the green after their tee shots on the par 3 18th, then both hit close shots to the hole, but finally the Glamorganshire player holed his putt with Cameron just missing his meaning he lost on the last hole but he played very well throughout the day and we congratulate him on his success for his first outing for the Somerset Boys. The whole team did very well but they just lost on the result losing to the Glamorganshire side 8 1/2 to 6 1/2. Cameron has also been called up to play against the Wiltshire Under 14 boys side on the 31st July which is due to be played at Burnham and Burrow.

Stacie Watts was called up to the girl’s squad and played at Exeter Golf and Country Club playing against the Devon girl’s side last week. She played very well throughout the day in very good conditions but unfortunately lost her match. The overall result was a 4 - 4 draw between the Somerset and Devon sides. The next match for Stacie is to play at Taunton Vale playing against Gloucestershire's Girls side and that is due to happen on the 30th July so we congratulate Stacie on her call up for the next match.

Congratulations to Cameron and Stacie on their call ups for their respective matches in the coming weeks and we wish them the best of luck in their matches and hope for all the best.

LSGC Juniors Vs Weston - Super - Mare

LSGC Juniors Vs Weston - Super - Mare

After our two victories so far this season we had our toughest match of the season against a strong Weston Super Mare side. Weather was really good but very windy, the golf course was in great condition despite all the rain the previous few days and the rough was very long so a chance to lose a few balls on the course.

In our first singles match Haydn 'Legend' Gibson played a 3 handicap player and despite getting the shots from the opponent he still played well and even though he was 1 down with 1 to play he holed a brilliant 35 foot putt on the last to ensure a half for Long Sutton. The second singles match was Cameron Barrett against a very strong 6 handicap player; he started well playing stroke for stroke but eventually the experience of the 6 handicapper got the better of Cameron and with a crucial birdie on the 17th the Weston - Super - Mare player won the second game 2&1 so Long Sutton was 1 1/2 - 1/2 down after 2 games.

Then in our 1st 4 ball match it was the pairing of Stacie Watts and Will Ross; they played well together receiving between them 5 shots each but were outplayed and succumbed to a 3&1 defeat making it 2 1/2 to 1/2 with one to play. Our 2nd 4 ball match was the combination of Sam Clarke and Rubin Stacey who were also gaining shots from their opponents but that did not faze the young pairing as they played in a great team effort and were 1up on the last but were pegged back by the Weston group so halving the match and this confirmed the result of Long Sutton suffering their first defeat of the season and conceding to a 3 - 1 defeat

Our next match is on the 5th August and is a Home match against Wells so the team sheet is available for juniors to confirm for the next game. Unlucky on the result everyone but we can still do it and win our remaining last 3 games. See you all till the next match.

Yours Sincerely

Team Manager Steve Stopforth
