On Thursday the 17th March, in teams of four, 56 seniors competed for the 1st trophy of the year, The Long Vale Trophy. Most seniors will be aware that this was originally competed for between Long Sutton and Taunton Vale golf clubs, but with the sad demise of the Taunton club, we now compete for this as an internal competition and it was good to see so many of the ex T.V. members feature in a competitive field. I sound like a commentator at the Cheltenham races! It was a bit chilly for the early tee times, but the spring sunshine was a pleasure to enjoy and on the course you could see the results of the graft that Johnny Tulk and his team have been putting in. What a close competition. Club captain John Williams, teamed up with Chris Warren, Graham Brimble and Peter Bell & recorded a very credible net 66.1. They were just piped by seniors’ vice captain Rod who led Scottish Ian, new member Bill Campbell and chopper Axe to an excellent net 66. But neither team were in the top two slots! Paterson JR, Nick Dennis, John Jeanes and our I.T. guru Dave, recorded a net 65.7. Over post match sausage rolls, their team exuded disappointment when they recounted that having seen Nick stiff his chip just 2 feet from the pin on the second, the rest of the team couldn’t find a putt between them. But who am I to jest about those who miss short putts. JR and team were beaten by just 0.6 and with an excellent winning score of net 65.1 The Long Vale Trophy was won by big Jim Lloyd, Tim Forward, Nigel Griffiths and club vice captain John Blackwell. Congratulations. Played as a Florida Scramble, I found this a really enjoyable team format and as Mike Bowling commented to me, it is pretty much like playing in a 3 ball, and that keeps the overall match time well under control.
