Originally scheduled for September this return match was played on 10th October in bright, if slightly chilly conditions. I haven’t played at this club for some years and I was keen to see the improvements I had heard about. There was certainly evidence of this in the club house, but less so on the course. It is still a lot of “up hills and down dales” and my opinion was probably not helped when gremlins entered my electric trolley and I ended up pushing from the 7th hole. Those hills get steeper when you are pushing, believe me!
I was out first with playing partner Mike Poole and he did a fine job of holding us together to get us a half.
Rod Tucker and Chris Thayer secured another half in match 2. Match 3 with Steve Uzzell and Chris Slocombe was lost 5 and 4 and another loss in match 4 with the two blokes from Stoke, Graham Brimble and Gordon Clamp going down 4 and 2. Malcolm Dennes & Peter just lost out on the last put on the last hole, but still managed a half and in the last match Dave Manning and Franco Calandrini had the best win of the day by 6 & 5, great result. Overall we had just been beaten by 3½ t o 2½. The dress code to follow the match was smart casual with a cold meat buffet, both of which went down a lot better than the joke I told!
