Another good win in the Somerset Bowl

Somerset Bowl latest result

On a swelteringly hot day the Long Sutton team took on a strong team from Vivary Park at Cricket St Thomas in the next round of the Somerset Bowl. First out for us was Roy Parmiter and Martin Hawkins, unfortunately for them the pair they played were on form and they lost. Next up were Steve Southgate and Norman Banfield, they fought hard but also lost. So with the match posed at 2-0 to Vivary we turned our attention to the last 3 matches - Gary French and Kevin Purdy won handsomely and got us back to 2-1, next up were Richard Bartin and Hughie McQuire, holes trading hands through the back nine but they ground out a result leaving the match squared up at 2-2. So down to the final pair, Jamie Brodie and Chris Binding. Through 10 they were a couple up, after 15 all square and the Vivary pair were battling hard, to the par 16th, nerves jangling from the whole team watching on, Chris cool as you like slots a putt for a 2 and walked to the 17th tee 1 up 2 to play, he then smashed a drive just short of the green as cool as you like! The resulting 4 won the hole and took us forward to the next round! Well done team, a potential fixture against Orchardleigh looms depending on their result – onwards and upwards.

Somerset Bowl WIN v Isle of Wedmore

"On a relatively calm afternoon at Mendip golf club, we took on a team from the Isle of Wedmore golf club, in the Somerset Bowl (foursomes), a tough match for us with 2 of our 5 pairs giving shots, the rest receiving a solitary shot each. Great wins for Gary French and Wes Allen (4&3) and Chris Binding and Jamie Brodie (4&2). Unfortunately John Williams and Pete Burch lost as did Steve Southgate and Norman Banfield, with Roy and myself left on the course fending off a strong fight back from our opponents, fortunately they missed their par putt at 17 to leave us one up playing the last where we snuck a half to win won up and help us progress to the next round. Well done team some great results! Looking forward to the next round against Vivary or Cleavdon.

Regards

Paul Wills"

Mail on Sunday Report ~ Long Sutton v Yeovil 13/02/16

Long Sutton vs Yeovil
On Saturday 13th February a brave team of 5 made the journey to Yeovil to
play them in the Mail on Sunday singles competition, with many of us lacking
any recent play due to the poor weather conditions a good result was going
to be a challenge. We found the course in good condition with the exception
of a number of temporary greens, there was some good golf played by all but
ultimately our lack of golf showed and we lost 3 1/2 to 1 1/2. Andy Moray
secured the half and Steve Stopforth giving 8 shots won 2 up. Myself, Roy
Parmiter and Jon Elliot unfortunately lost to good opposition. Well done
team a galant effort. We now look forward to the preparation for our Avalon
season. If you are interested in representing Long Sutton in any of the
teams please get in contact with us and keep an eye on the notice boards.

PAST CAPTAIN’S SHIELD AND PAST CAPTAIN’S CUP

PAST CAPTAIN’S SHIELD AND PAST CAPTAIN’S CUP

The Past Captain’s Shield took place last Sunday 20th September.  The competition was entered by 73 members, who contributed £73.00 to St Margaret’s Hospice and my thanks for those donations. The competition was well fought with two members fighting for 1st place with 41 points.  Luke Appleton just pipped Malcolm Head on the back 9.  Well played to both.

Within this competition, the Past Captain’s, play for the Past Captain’s Cup.  This Cup was presented to the Club by John Padfield when he was Captain and has been played for ever since.  This year I was pleased to see 20 of the 24 Past Captain’s playing, and for 18 of their wives and partners attending the traditional lunch afterwards. It was a grand day starting with bacon baps and coffee and ending with the lunch / evening and everyone enjoyed themselves.  This year the Cup was won with a substantial margin by Malcolm Head, who took home the trophy and an engraved whiskey tumbler from the Club Captain, as a memento.

Mike Poole.
