Long Sutton A win County Trounson Trophy
Sunday 16th September 2015
Long Sutton Golf Club
On a gloriously sunny day with very little wind and almost perfect golfing conditions the Trounson Trophy was held on Somerset Golf Union’s President Tommy Tulk’s home course of Long Sutton.
The Trounson Trophy is an Inter Club County handicap Bowmaker competition, medal format with 4 players making up a team with the best 3 scores to count off a maximum handicap of 18. One player from each team in a match so every opportunity to go head to head against players from 3 other clubs.
21 teams from across the county competed on a challenging course perfectly prepared for the occasion by the green’s staff.
In an attempt to win and deliver the trophy to President Tommy Tulk on his home course Long Sutton fielded 4 teams; they duly obliged coming 1st, 2nd and 4th with Worlebury A in 3rd place.
The winning team Long Sutton A were represented by Paul Wills, Jon Elliot, Gary French and Ian Brown and they returned 3 best cards totalling 211 which was 2 under par – a terrific score. 2nd place Long Sutton C winning the Leonard Fisher Trophy was represented by Steve Stopforth, Wes Allen, Luke Appleton and Allan Pilkington.
Steve Stopforth also won the Presidents Trophy for the best nett score of 3 under par.
CLUB NIGHT WARM UP AND RULES EVENING ~1st April 2015
CLUB NIGHT WARM UP AND RULES EVENING
Following the success of the Rules Evenings last year it is proposed to run a further evening this year and thought it would be a nice idea to run this in parallel with a Club Night taster game.
The competition will be a 9 hole individual stableford with full handicap. The date for this is to be the 1st April 2015 and tee times will be blocked out from 14:30 to 17:00. This is so that everyone will be in by 19:00 to enable the Rules Evening to start promptly. I apologise if the 5 pm deadline is a problem for some of you but hopefully you will be able to plan an “early release” to join in.
Entrants will be able to order a “Club Night” meal before starting the competition and for most there should be time to enjoy your meal before the Rules evening commences at 7pm.
The cost for the event will be £4.00 (this to cover the prizes and also the cost of running the Rules session) and the meal charge will be £5.00. For those only attending the Rules session the cost will be £2.00.
I look forward to your support for what I hope will be a fun and informative event prior to the main season start.
Captain’s Drive In Report & photos
At 10:30 am on Saturday 1st November, 112 (well 111 as one did not turn up!) golfers teed off to start the Captain’s “Drive in” Texas Scramble. The day was uncharacteristically warm and sunny, and the course was in superb condition thanks to the hard work of the green keepers during the morning.
The 28 teams successfully marshalled themselves around the course and the round was completed in around 4 hours, a credit to the scheduling skills of Norman Banfield and the proficiency of the participating golfers.
The spread of scores was between 66.3 and 56.7, but the winning 56.7 was a couple of shots ahead of the others. A much deserved win for the team of Alan Pilkington, Franco Calandrini, Wayne Parks and Nigel Pugson. Well done.
Following the match a very sociable hour was spent over soup and a roll and a drop of light refreshment! The Captain’s, Sylvie Coache Tucker, Colin Hardaway, Tyler Lennox Gordon and myself all then proceeded to the first tee, and surrounded by a sizeable crowd drove ourselves into our Captaincies.
My drive was a very creditable 221 yards, a distance that was guessed correctly by Jamie Brodie who collected a bottle of whiskey for his trouble.
The event raised £95.00 from the drive in guesses, and £272 from the raffle, which together with donations received from the Ryder Cup and the B and C team away days means that over £500 has so far been raised for the Captain’s and Club Charity, St Margaret’s Hospice.
My thanks to everyone who supported the event and helped to make the day a success.
