Report on Seniors v Lyme Regis 18th August
Having welcomed one sea side team from Axe Cliff to LSGC on Tuesday, another, this time the Seniors’ team from Lyme Regis, were welcomed on Thursday! Cultivating friendships is a big part of the Seniors’ inter club matches that we play and meeting up again with Lyme Regis captain Paul Millard and his pal Johnny Jones was a good example. Colin Hardaway and I enjoyed an excellent round of golf with them. A small miracle occurred and my putting had improved since Tuesday, Colin and I dove-tailed well and with Colin’s par on the 17th, we won our match 3 & 1.
John Packett and Al Webber, in match 2, were 2 down at the turn, pulled it back to all square by the 12th but were eventually “Rogered” by Lyme Seniors Roger Baker & Roger Turner, the latter playing off 7, (I dream of playing off 7!) loosing their match 3 & 2.
Then the dream team of Rich Bartin & Mike Bowling played some great golf in match 3 winning by 2 & 1. Mike tells me his putt on the 17th was the clincher!
The 2 Johns, Jeanes & Pearson were 2 down after only 3 holes in match 4 but turned the tables and brought home an excellent win by 4& 3. This included Canadian John’s 2 on the 14th missing a hole in one by inches.
In match 5, Billy Bond’s banditry was less obvious than earlier in the week and with playing partner Gavin Baker (Gavin just back from Buckingham Place) they went from being 2 up, to all square to loosing their match on the 18th hole. First defeat in an inter club match, this year for Bill, so he tells me.
The experience of 2 past captains, Malcolm Dennes and Glyn Ottery showed through in spades in the last match as they dished out a bit of a bashing, winning by 4 & 2. Great result.
The overall result was a second win this week for Long Sutton Seniors, this time by 4 matches to 2. Our golf course is a credit to Jon Tulk and his staff, the post match meal was one of my favourites (baked ham, parsley sauce & new potatoes), thank you Judy. Fran and all the staff looked after us really well as always. Lastly a big thank you to all the team members who played. I went home feeling pretty good.
Regards to all
