In a match with some close results, we enjoyed another excellent day of golf as the seniors beat Wells at home on Thursday June 16th. I was pleased that Glyn Ottery, “the man with the camper van” was able to take time out from his travels and step in as super sub and partner me in the first team out. The Wells captain Dave Hayward, who is a reasonable sort of golfer, playing off 5 (!) and his partner Ron playing off 12, were probably a bit taken aback to lose 2 and 1, but that’s golf. Well done Glyn.
Next out were Richard Bartin and Steve Uzzell, who I had down as a good chance for a win. However, when Richard came in and declared his clubs were for sale, I knew it hadn’t gone to plan. They had lost 2 and 1.
In match 3, John Packet and Bill Bond were all square at the turn, then played some dove tailing golf on the back 9 to also win 2 & 1. That’s 2 wins for the club this week John, top man.
Match 4 was a first outing for John Drummond, who is new to the seniors, but well known at the club. He was paired up with Alan Webber and they managed to secure a win, by one, on the 18th. That’s also 2 team wins for you this week Alan.
In match 5, I failed to get any detail from Gavin Baker and John Whitehead, apart from the fact they just lost by one. So, another very close match and they were still smiling.
Simon Scarborough paired up with John Pearson in the last match out and they found themselves 3 down early on. Then Simon got his golf head on, par, birdie, par, playing some steady holes. Not to be out done, on the 18th, John chipped in from 30 yards out to get a birdie, to win the hole and to win the match by one. What a finish. John also had nearest the pin on 17 and this was also his second team win, of quite a week.
Long Sutton won 4 matches to two.
