"Seniors draw against The Dorset"

 Narrative

There was only one winner at The Dorset - the weather!

Both teams set out in the drizzle with high hopes of a dry round of golf and instead found themselves battling the sodden turf and wet greens. The match captains Andy and Bill had agreed to review the conditions on the 9th and decided to carry on. However, the Match 2 pairings led by veteran Peter Bell and sidekick Len decided enough was enough and walked off the 9th green for an early warm shower. Being 6 down had nothing to do with it.

Despite the mutiny, Captains Bill and Andy together with partners Rich and Rob teed off the 10th with the Long Sutton pair 2up mainly due to Rich's par golf.

As the fourball reached the 10th green conditions had deteriorated with Puddles everywhere from Puddletown to Tolpuddle and the golfing martyrs had had enough and decided to declare the match drawn

My thanks to all the team for their support and look forward to the return match on 16th July in warm dry summer weather

Bill

Shock News - "David Kennedy suffers rare defeat in Seniors Singles"

Popular senior and 2017 'Golfer of the Year"  David lost 6&5 to Joe Jowett. Playing off 18 for the first time David discarded his 'Bandit" tag and struggled for a bit of form following a long winter lay off. By contrast, Joe who is very good value playing off 20 reversed the trend and staked an early claim for "Bandit of the Year".

Well done Joe and commiserations to David who now retires the "I've Been Kennedy'd" cap.

Seniors Win at Minehead

The first match of the inter-club season and the last match against Minehead resulted in a comprehensive victory for the Seniors. Played in dry conditions with a cool coastal breeze, the strong looking (on paper at least) Long Sutton team were keen to get off to a winning start, which is just what happened.

Rookie match captain Bill Bond (20) and veteran playing partner Peter Bell(18) raced to 8 up!  Home captain Graham and playing partner Bill were desperate to avoid a 10&8 defeat and become the worst ever performers in the history of Minehead Seniors. They needn't have worried as Minehead Bill stopped the rot on hole 9 for a half and captain Graham was so elated he walked off the green carrying the pin. Despite a spirited comeback Bill & Peter closed out on the 15th to win 4&3.

The strong pairing of Steve Uzzell (19) and Martin Hawkins (8) showed their class with a net eagle for Steve and at least 2 birdies from Martin on their way to a comfortable 4&2 win

Graham Brimble (16) and partner Mike (Strings) Stringer (18) playing against Minehead pair of Neil & Dermott were treated to a comical sideshow on the way to a 3&2 win. Teeing off on the 15th Dermott was missing. Looking back towards the 14th, the 84 year old Irishman was wrestling with his upturned trolley, bag on ground. After a quick rescue job Dermott was ready for action.

The 4th match pairing of Rich Bartin (9) and reigning Somerset Snrs Stableford champion Rich Axe (19) was the dream team. The promise of great things from this pair of winners was looking justified by claiming 5 birdies in the round. However, showing uncharacteristic complacency found themselves all square on the last tee. What happened next was a humbling experience for the serial winner Rich Bartin and his decorated sidekick Rich Axe. They were beaten on the last by 86 year old Dennis winning the hole with a good par.

We certainly had an embarrassment of Rich's!

In the penultimate match Gordon Clamp (27) was paired with the ultimate competitor Peter Hill (18). In a enjoyable nip and tuck encounter against plucky opponents Graham (18) and Dave (28) the Long Sutton veteran pair were 1 up going to the 18th.  Despite an excellent birdie 2 from Peter, Dave sank a 25ft put for a nett eagle to halve the match.

In the spirit of true sportsmanship Peter and Gordon (not the 60s pop duo!) were pleased for Dave as it was the first time he had ever hit the green with his tee shot let alone a nett eagle!

No winners or losers here just highlights and lowlights of golf

Our own seniors Chaplain, Rev Robin Ewbank (24) had quite an influential debut.

Playing with partner Mike Poole (14) they secured a 4&2 win following an extremely rare one putt for Mike. Devine intervention at play? According to Dr Billy Graham (died aged 99 on previous day) "God answers prayers everywhere, except on a golf course!" All this and a really well received grace before the meal. Thanks Robin.

Well played team and thanks

Bill

LONG SUTTON SENIORS: Runners-Up in the Minehead Inter-Club Challenge Trophy 2017

The Minehead and West Somerset Golf Club Seniors Inter-Club Challenge Trophy Competition was held at Minehead on Monday 30th October.  A total of 9 teams participated representing :-  Minehead, 2 from Cricket St. Thomas, Enmore Park, Long Sutton, Oake Manor, Taunton & Pickeridge, Tiverton and Vivary.  There were 8 players per team playing as pairs in 4 ball, better ball Stableford scoring groups, with all 4 pairs’ scores to count.  The weather was dry, sunny with little wind, the course was dry and the greens were running well. This provided excellent golfing conditions and beckoned some good scores. A Shotgun start ensured that all groups completed their rounds at about the same time to enjoy the post - match meal.

The Long Sutton Team included:- Rich Bartin & Peter Hill ; Bill Campbell & Martin Hawkins;  John Parkinson & Bill Bond;  Alec Lyon & Steve Uzzell. Rich and Peter, Bill and Martin each came in with 43 points while John and Bill, Alec and Steve each came in with 41 points thus yielding a very creditable team score of 168 points. Was it too much to hope for a team win with this score? We waited with anticipation as the results were declared at the end of the meal and after our bets were placed in our table’s sweepstake! It turned out that 168 points was indeed sufficient for a win but sadly, Tiverton also had this score and hence “ stole “ the Trophy on countback.  We consoled ourselves with the knowledge that we were actually “ joint winners “ !! We each received a bottle of wine and Tesco voucher as our second prize!

My heartfelt thanks to all the Long Sutton Team who put up such a strong showing and who accepted the result with such dignity.   Perhaps next year?!!

                                                                                                                                    Peter Hill.

Departing Seniors Captain, Rod Tucker, presents a cheque to his chosen charity.

Departing Seniors Captain, Rod Tucker presents a cheque for £3,230.22 to his chosen charity for his year in office, The "Pink Champagne" Breast Cancer Charity, at an informal ceremony following Thursday's Roll-Up on 5th October. A magnificent, and much appreciated effort, by all the members, and Rod in particular, who proved himself most adept at coaxing the loose change out of members' pockets!
