Minehead Inter-Club Challenge 2016
SENIORS COME THIRD AT MINEHEAD
A team of 8 Long Sutton Seniors took 3rd Prize in the
Minehead Inter-Club Challenge Trophy
on Monday 31st October ‘16.
The participating players were :- Colin Hardaway; Martin Hawkins; Len Collin; Richard Body; Ken Jacobs; Gavin Baker; John Parkinson; Peter Hill.
The players made their individual ways with an early start to enjoy coffee and bacon baps at Minehead and West Somerset Golf Club.
There were a total of 12 teams of 8 players playing a 4 ball, better ball, Stableford format with all 4 cards to count and a shotgun start. Many of the participating teams are on our Inter-Club circuit so there were many familiar faces at the gathering and acquaintances renewed.
It was a cold start but it remained dry throughout and the course was playing pretty well. We did think that someone with an unusual sense of humour had chosen some of the pin positions which were difficult but to be expected in a prestigious event like this. The course is adjacent to the sea and to Butlins thus providing an entertaining backdrop for the competing players! It is a flat course but has some interesting challenges.
Long Sutton fought hard in good golfing conditions with some excellent play from the team. Drayton won the trophy with 166 points meaning that their average card sores were 41.5 ! Second place were Vivary with 164 points. Long Sutton came third with a very creditable 163 points thus beating many of the local notable contenders including:- Enmore Park, Taunton & Pickeridge, Oake Manor and Cricket St. Thomas. We each received a bottle of wine and a sleeve of balls as prizes.
Congratulations to the Long Sutton Team for putting up a really strong showing and my thanks to my partner John Parkinson for playing so well and carrying me for much of the round!

Another match that was originally scheduled for September, this back match was finally played on 17th October. With the seniors’ AGM taking place on 13th October, when I handed the captaincy to Rod, I had scheduled a holiday from the 15th and was therefore unavailable for the Honiton game. Bit disappointed really, as I enjoy the Honiton course and the food is always top draw. Captain Rod was also unavailable and therefore I was pleased when club captain John Williams offered to step in for me. Before I jetted off to the sun, I had picked the team for the day, based mainly on those selected for the original match and on paper we looked pretty strong :-
Match 1 John would be partnered by Tim Forward.
Match 2 Richard Bartin & Franco
Match 3 Dave Manning & Alan Webber
Match 4 Graham Brimble & Peter Hill
Match 5 Gordon Clamp & Gavin Baker
Match 6 Dave Kennedy & Stewart Thompson
A lot of experience, some good match play golfers, I was confident.
Not sure what went wrong. I didn’t get all the details, just an email to advise me we had lost! Apparently, at the post match meal, our captain John blamed poor team selection. Fair enough. I understand the Honiton golfers were most hospitable and a good day out was enjoyed by all. My thanks to everyone who took part.

A Message from Rod Tucker, Seniors Captain 2016-17
It is an honour to be the Seniors’ Captain of Long Sutton for 2016/17.
I have been a member of this great golf club since 1992 and have enjoyed every moment of my time here. The ever improving course is very senior friendly, not too long and easy walking, however you have to be accurate as the ditches come into play and the greens are small. For a golf lover there is nothing quite like being a member of a club, it’s about playing regular golf on a course you enjoy; but Long Sutton Seniors believe it is more than that, it’s about camaraderie and friendship, sharing a passion and having fun.
If you are over 55, you are welcome to join our Seniors Section for £5 per year. We already have 158 members who compete in our seniors’ competitions on Thursday mornings. We run summer and winter knockout competitions and there is also a friendly roll up on Tuesdays from early morning.
In summer there are about 35 friendly fixtures against other local clubs, on a home and away basis. The accent is on “Good Golf, Good Food and Good Company”, and it affords an inexpensive way to enjoy a variety of other courses in the area.
We are very lucky to have such a fantastic committee; they all give their time very generously to make our Seniors Section such a success.
If you are having a bad day, enjoy the company and the views. After the game, enjoy a drink or a meal prepared by our excellent chefs in our modern clubhouse, where you are sure to be given a friendly welcome; it’s that sort of club.
This year my Charity will be “Pink Champagne” Breast Cancer. Your generous donations into my ‘Blob’ pot will be most welcome and there will be other Charity events during my year.
My thanks to Chris Hockey for inviting me to be his Captain for 2017, an honour I was proud to accept.
My Vice Captain is Jon Searl and we look forward to having a great year of golf at Long Sutton.
