Seniors Avalon League v Mendip Spring
Seniors Avalon league update
The team played their second match away to Mendip Spring last Monday.
First out were Martin Hawkins and myself. Not quite at our best, but nevertheless we played par golf and won fairly comfortably 4 and 3.
Next out were John Parkinson and Nick Goodliff. A strong pairing who despite giving quite a few shots finished strongly to win 3 and 2. Two up
Norman Banfield and Hugh McGuire followed, giving a few shots which their opponents took full advantage of and ended up winning 3 and 2. 2 - 1.
Next out were Rich Bartin and Geoff Monks. This was a very tight match with leads changing hands a few times. Rich and Geoff went to the last needing a birdie to halve the match. Both unfortunately just missed putts and they ended up losing 1 down. Match all square 2 each.
Last out were Martin Abbott and Rob Ford. This match was a few holes behind the others and no one knew the latest! I went out and saw them on the 17 th . Both Martin and Rob had great drives but proceeded to top their next two shots! It looked as if they were going to lose the hole so I asked how the match was going. Martin said " we have already won 3 and 2!" Phew .
Well played all. A difficult place to play. Wedmore lost 5 nil the previous week!
Seniors Avalon match v Wheathill - away
The season's first match was away to Wheathill. Last season we lost 4 1/2 to 1/2 ! We were well beaten.
First out was John Parkinson and Mike Poole. They unfortunately came across a pair on great form and receiving quite a few shots. Ultimately, Wheathill won 4-2. 1 down.
Next out were Martin Hawkins and myself. This ended up as a match which both Martin and I described as one of the hardest matches we had played in.
The match contained 11 birdies. We eventually settled for a half after both pairs had chances to win on the last hole.
Third out were Rich Bartin and Geoff Monks. They raced into 3 hole lead , which they maintained for most of the match. They were, however, pegged back but held on to win 1 up.
Fourth out were Phil Bowditch and Martin Abbott. The match was a very close one with Phil winning the 13th with an eagle. This ultimately was the turning point and they won 2 and 1.
Last out were Norm Banfield and Hugh McGuire. Again a close match before eventually winning fairly comfortably 3 and 2.
This was a very good start to the campaign .
Well done team, Mendip Spring next, again, away.
Seniors Invitation - played on the 11th May 2017
The weather was fine with very little wind so the expectations from our Members and their Guests were high. We had 32 players in the Seniors Invitation a few more than last year and they all said how much they enjoyed the course and the lovely carvery cooked by Roger. My blobby pot raised £70 for my charity so thank to everyone who made a contribution.
The competition was a Stableford with both scores to count; the result was as follows :
1st Mike Bowling & Frank Martin 67 points
2nd John Packett & Nick Clarke 66 points
3rd Alec Lyon & Jerry Stephens 65 points
Nearest the pins : 5th Bill Bond, 7th Paul Chesney, 12th Bernard McTernan & 17th Rob Hartely.
Thank you all for taking part and to Chris Sutton for sorting the cards.

Bridport v Long Sutton Seniors - Thursday, 4th May 2017
Game 1. Rod Tucker (9) & Franco Calandrini (19), this was very much an up & down affair, with Long Sutton going 3 down early on, only to pull back to all square. However giving 14 shots to the opposition and with them playing so well, the final result had an inevitablity about it, we lost 2 & 1
Game 2. Jon Searl (15) & Keith Lancey lost 7 & 5 to a good Bridport pair. This was a shame as they were the “Captain’s Bankers” or maybe I misspelt that phrase!!
Game 3. Mike Layzell (22) & John Rooks (18) had a very good game, but went down 5 & 4 on a Bridport course where it was very difficult to hold the ball on the greens.
Game 4. Tim Forward (12) & Stewart Thompson(20) had a great win over a very strong Bridport pair. Thank you both for playing and well done both of you both.
Game 5. Andrew Elfick (22) & Peter Hill (18) lost, 6 & 5. Thanks for playing both.
Game 6. Last pair out was Bill Bond (20) & Chris Hockey (22) who had a fantastic win beating a good Bridport pair. I hope your free for next year!
Final Result Bridport 4 Long Sutton 2
Thank you all for playing hope you had a good day. The food was great, the hospitality was great and the golf .......well !!!
Two out of Three’s not bad.
The Seniors outgunned by Farrington at home! - 2nd May 2017
The first match out was Len Collin and Colin Hardaway with Colin giving shots to everybody! It was a tough fought match although we never managed to head the Farrington pair of Dave and Ray who putted absolutely brilliantly all day and were full of praise for the quality of our greens. We managed to pull it back to all square half way through the game but they pulled away again and despite winning the 16th we finally succumbed on the 17th to go down 3 & 1.
Next out were Steve Uzzell and Bill Campbell. Although they eventually won 3 & 2, our only win of the day as it turned out, it was fairly nip and tuck all the way. The home pairing started strongly and went into a 3 hole lead after 4, having halved the first. From then on holes were evenly shared with Steve and Bill arriving at the 16th still 3 up. The 16th was halved and both pairs shook hands. A fine win for Long Sutton.
Match 3 saw Gavin Baker paired with Alex Morrice; they had a great game, closely fought. At one stage they were 4 down but managed to pull it back to all square as they arrived at the 16th. Then on the 16th they were beaten by the handicapping as they had the same score as the opposition but they had the extra shot. After failing to halve the 17th they went down 2 & 1. Bad luck guys!
Match 4 saw John Packett and Jimmy Quinn paired together. They started the match with the opposition down to one player, Dave, as his partner Steve was late arriving! All the same they lost the first hole but managed to halve the second before Dave's partner managed to catch up with them on the third tee. They then proceeded to go 3 up before John and Jimmy started to pull things back. The home pairing managed to get to all square a couple of times but never got in front. The 17th saw Jimmy hole his second shot with a putt of at least 30 feet to get back to all square and John managed to halve the 18th with an equally important if less specatacular 12 foot putt to halve the match. All in all a fair result John thought.
In match 5 Bill Bond and Andre Blond were up against a consistent 12 handicapper and his 25 handicap partner who grubbed a driver onto the 9th green and won the hole with a 3 net 2; and this after Andre had got closest to the pin! "Enough said" was Bill's comment - not their lucky day as they lost on the 16th 3 & 2
The final pairing saw Dave Butcher playing with Peter Hill against the Farrington pairing of Kevin, a 23 handicapper and a rooky as far as Inter Club Games is concerned, and Rick who played off 17. They started by halving the first three holes but sadly the Orchardleigh pair dovetailed much better and much quicker than did Peter and Dave. Dave admitted after the match that he was not in good form and that Peter struggled manfully to make a game of it. Kevin was playing like a 15 handicapper and taking good advantage of his extra shots so that by the turn Long Sutton were 4 down!! Each time they grabbed one back their opponents responded instantly. Our boys were dormy 3 going down the 16th; Peter and Dave got a good 6 but Rick delivered a par 5 to clinch the game 4 & 2
Thanks for your efforts everybody and here's hoping we have better luck in the return match on the 16th!
Len Collin, Match Captain
