Seniors v Enmore Park – What a fantastic result

When we played the Enmore Park away fixture, back in March, we suffered a defeat 5 matches to 3. I  was very keen to turn the tables on them for our home fixture.

With club captain John Williams, teeing off with me in the opening match and a strong 16 man  team,  we set about the task.  John played some great golf early on and we quickly went 2 up. Enmore captain Paul and his partner Tony then won 3 in a row and we turned the corner 1 down. The match had started in lovely sunshine but the rain, that was forecast, arrived and after an hour or so, we were wet, vey wet.  Paul & I did have a brief chat on the 10th tee about making it a 9 hole match. But we’re British, we don’t let a bit of rain put us off, so off we teed down the 10th and I am so glad we did. The rain did ease off, my golf  improved, John played some more steady stuff and having won 5 holes in a row, we secured  a win 4 and 2. Great start, but even better was to come.

In match 2,  Martin Abbot & Nigel Griffiths had another great win 4 & 3.

We stumbled very slightly in match 3 with John Pearson and John Thomas getting a half, only for more good news from match 4 where Jimmy Quinn and Bill Bond won 2 and 1.

The rest of the news was just, good, good and good! Chris Thayer and Steve Uzzell won 4 & 3, then John Rooks and Gavin Baker got in early from the rain, having managed a fantastic win in their match 8 & 7.

John Whiting & Alex Morrice kept the positive news coming with another win, this time by 5 & 4 and our tail end team of David Kennedy and Len Collin finished the overall match in style with yet another win for the home team by 4 & 3.

Our  best result this year by a very impressive 7 ½   to  a ½.    Thanks very much to everyone in the Long Sutton Seniors team, it certainly put a smile on my face. The match was followed by an excellent turkey carvery  (it was beginning to feel a bit like Christmas!) with some convivial conversation.

Seniors lose at Kingweston

Monday 27th June saw Roger Brassington lead a team from Long Sutton to the course at Kingweston.

The course was in excellent condition, but the greens tended to be slow and even though we lost heavily, the games in many cases, were keenly contested and on another day it could have been a different result. The home side were in good form and used the home leg to their advantage.

Match Captain Roger Brassington  playing alongside Martin Abbot  lost 4 &2.

The second team of Franco Calandrini and  John Jeanes  lost as well, 7&5

The third team of Steve Uzzell and John Rooks played well to score a half

Fourth team out was John Whitehead and  Alan Webber and they played a tight game losing by 1 hole.

Similarly, Bob Fill  and Cyril Griffin also lost by one hole.

The final team of Peter Champness and Jimmy Quinn lost 4&3.

 Overall Long Sutton  lost 5 ½ to  ½  .

Roger Brassington won nearest  the pin on the 17th.

After the match, we retired to the Quarry Inn in Keinton Mandeville, where an excellent meal was enjoyed in a convivial atmosphere. Jimmy Quinn then told us a few jokes, so apart from the result an extremely enjoyable day.

SENIORS DRAW AWAY TO THE ISLE OF WEDMORE

On Tuesday 7th June 2016 Long Sutton Seniors, under the captaincy of Rod Tucker played away to the Isle of Wedmore

The 1st team out were Nigel Griffiths (13) and Chris Thayer (17) who gave us a great start winning 2 & 1

The 2nd team was Douglas Hamilton (12) and Peter Hill (18), Peter dovetailed very well and they had the biggest win of 3 & 1. Well played to you both.

The 3rd team was Match Captain, Rod Tucker (10) and first time at I.O.W
John Jeanes (19) against Wedmore Captain Mike Tanswell (17) and playing partner Terry (18). It was a close match with Long Sutton always behind, and 2 down with 2 holes to play. Rod’s par won the 17th and John had a great 3 on the18th to half the game. Nerves of steel, well played John.

The 4th team Gavin Baker (18) and Alan Webber (13) lost by 1 hole . (Maybe Gavin’s bionic bits need tweeking).

The 5th team of Dave Butcher (20) and late again Len Collin (26) got a great half against a good Wedmore pair, well played.

The 6th & 7th teams Jon Packett (18) and Simon Scarborough (15) and Phill Bowditch (8) and John Whitehead (17) both lost their games to strong Wedmore pairings.

The 8th team was Richard Bartin (9) and Martin Abbott (12). With the match depending on this result, around the corner came a performance which would have graced any panto you have ever seen, the shaking of the head to the dropping onto his knees it was pure theatre, Widow Twanky this Christmas, for you Mr Bartin !!! But this win halved the match and it was an honourable draw, well done to you both.

The only controversy was on the nearest the pin hole on the 9th. Wedmore Captain Mike had pulled his tee shot over the hedge and green keeper’s hut, but when we arrived on the green there was his ball, nearest to the pin, was it DIVINE INTERVENTION or more maybe the “HAND OF GOD” , neither, it was the hand of HAMILTON , Douglas had found the ball and thrown it onto the green. It took him 2 throws as the first one hit a tree. (That’s another club we can’t take Douglas back to!!).
Thank you all for playing.
A great day, great food and great company.
Rod Tucker
