The Seniors v Farrington away on 16th May - the weather was the winner!

Once again the elements were against us! The first match out featured Len Collin, match captain, and Peter Hill teeing off against Farrington's first and closely matched pair of Mike and Dave.  The weather was overcast but dry and the course was playing well.  Len quickly demonstrated that he was on ( very! ) good form by halving the first with a par.   He then made good use of his generous stroke allocation and followed with a win on the second and on the third.  Len and Peter dovetailed well for the remainder of the holes played and only lost 2 holes, the rest being either halved or won.  It started raining as we progressed down the 6th fairway and spirits began to wane as the rain worsened.  We were 4 up at the end of the 13th with 5 to play and our opponents conceded defeat as the dry clubhouse beckoned.  This was not before Mike and Dave had quizzed Peter more than once about Len's real handicap!!

Next out were Dave Butcher and Gavin Baker. They managed to hold their own for the first few holes but slowly lost a couple to our opponents, who were also playing poorly, but not quite so badly as us. Both Dave and Gavin managed to win a couple of holes each, but by the time they came to the end of the 15th, they were four down and decided that the weather was the definite winner of the day, having totally demoralised all of us.  We walked in to find most of the other teams had similar ideas and were sitting in the lounge!

The third team out were Ian Jackaman and Franco Calandrini. They had close game in difficult conditions, the rain started on the second hole and didn't stop! They were all square after 9 and could have walked in as the four of them were totally drenched, but the Long Sutton spirit made them finish the 18 holes and we were congratulated by the rest of us for finishing al 18 holes even though the game finished on the 17 as they lost 2&1.

Next out were Bill Campbell and Alex Morrice. They were having a good game and were 1 up after 12, but the rain meant Alex could see nothing through his glasses. He took them off to putt but the results were disastrous and they lost 3 and 2. They were one of the few who finished and on the famous 12th hole they all played provisional balls!

Chris Hockey and jolly Jimmy Quinn were paired together in the 5th match out. They both started well and were two up after 4 holes. The opposition pulled it back to all square after 7 and a rain effected match finished early with the match captain declaring it a half, although in fairness to Farrington they were actually 2 up when they swam in!

The last pair were Steve Uzzell and Phil Bowditch and like the team before them they only managed to play nine holes Although the first four holes were shared, they were four down by the time the weather got the better of them.

All in all not the best of afternoons but Farrington seem to have coped with the conditions better than us, and certainly the later starters had the worst of it. Thanks to everybody who turned out and let’s hope for better luck next time.

Len Collin
