2017 MEN’S OPEN
After a week of vary changeable weather the 2017 Men’s Open was played in ideal conditions. Considering that only the 3 days earlier the bunkers were still flooded the green staff did a fantastic job in turning the course out in such excellent condition.
It was apparent early on that it would take a good score to win the day and that proved to be the case with home players Stuart Hodder and Gary French scoring a fantastic 48 points. They were closely followed by “the old stagers” Richard Dore and Roy Parmiter coming in with their customary 46 points - they had exactly the same score last year. The best visitors on the day were Lance Wells from Sherborne and Paul Hill from Yeovil with 42 points, closely followed again by our Welsh visitors Wayne Tanner and Dai Owin Pitt from Woodlake Park scoring 42 points.
Special thanks to our pro Andrew who, with a little help from myself, sorted the cards and put together a great prize table.
We had a total of 40 visiting players who all seemed to enjoy the course and the welcome they received from our lady members who looked after the reception desk in admirable fashion.
Finally thanks to our sponsor for the day Albert Goodman Chartered Accountants represented in the competition by Keith Miller.

Seniors Into the Scratch Knock-Out Final!
The Seniors team played Oake Manor in the Scratch KO bowl at Enmore on Friday.
First out was Dick Butcher who was up against a 3 handicapper county player - a tough ask. Dick was soon 5 down and eventually lost 6 and 5. One down!
Next out was John Parkinson who played extremely well and was soon 3 up.
Third out was Martin Hawkins, playing a 5 handicapper. The match was very tight and always looked to be going the full 18 holes.
Fourth out was Mick Capps who was always in front in this match, eventually winning 3 and 2. Match all square.
Last out was Rich Bartin. Unfortunately Rich went 4 down early on and never managed to recover this gap. 2 -1 down.
Meanwhile John lost 2 holes on the trot and had to go down the 18th - a par 5. John hit a superb 2nd to within 4 feet of the pin! Match all square. 2 - 2 .
Martin meanwhile went 1 up on the 17th. On the 18th, he hit a superb drive over 300 yards (down wind, down hill!) leaving an 8 iron in, landing just short of the green before chipping the ball dead!
3- 2 win!! Great game .
We now play Bath at a venue and date TBC.
Well played all.
Seniors Avalon League Update
On Monday 7th August the seniors team played The Mendip in the Avalon league.
Out first were Martin Hawkins and Nigel Griffiths, who played very well over 9 holes but were only 1 up at the turn.A careless 10th by us meant the match was all square, however we won the next 4 holes to win 4 and 3.
Next out were John Parkinson and Colin Hardaway. Again a very tough match but ended up winning on the 16th.
Third out were Rich Bartin and Rob Ford. Having lost the first 4 holes they never managed to recover and lost 4 and 3.
Fourth out were Phil Bowditch and Mike Bowling. Both played well in a tough match andended up winning on the 17th.
Last out were Norman Banfield and John Williams. They were 4 up at one stage but gave it away on the back 9 but held on to halve the match.
This result puts us 9 points clear at the top of East Division with 2 matches to go.
Well played all.
The Seniors Section - Celtic Challenge 2017
Played on Thursday 13th July 2017 on a lovely sunny day
60 players took part in the Celtic Challenge.
Lots of players had their Countries flags and colours. The team Captains were Ray Boulton (England) and Douglas Mc Hamilton ( Celts) let the Battle begin.
The first 3 games saw England take an early lead and although the Celts fought bravely and with half the games played England were leading 80 points to 63points. The Celts had their big guns in the last matches so it was all to play for, with players representing Ireland, Wales, Scotland, Italy and Isle of Wight, England would have a hard task. The England team kept up the momentum and won by 138 points England – 114 points Celts.
Thank you all for playing
Better luck Celts next year.

Match all square.
Third and fourth out were Martin Hawkins and John Parkinson. Both players were I/2 down at various stages in their respective matches.
