Report on seniors v Axe Cliff 4th April
Chris Thayer and I had to negotiate minor flooding & torrential rain as we made our way down the Axe valley and up the steepest of approaches to any golf club I have ever played. This course is not for the feint hearted and I almost felt that playing partner Glyn and I should rope together, as we struggled up the incline to find the first tee. Just in time, the rain cleared away, we puffed our way up hill to the first green and Glyn sunk a birdie putt. What a good start. I holed an embarrassingly long putt from off the green on the second to get a half (my best bit of the match) and with Glyn nailing 4 pars in a row we were suddenly 4 up after 7. That didn't last and we finished the round with match halved. Glyn tells me he had trouble sleeping later that night and found himself counting the number of putts he had on the 18th. Same as me mate, too many! Rich Bartin was back on form and with partner Paul Harris they recorded a great win 5 and 4. In match 3 Alan Webber and Keith L just lost but there was better news in match 4 where Tim Forward, playing in unseasonable shorts and Andy Elfick came in with a win 4 and 3. Second win in two matches for Andy, well done. An even stronger win for Malcolm D and David K in match 5, where they gave their opposition no mercy and came home winning 7 and 6, stunning. Chris T and gentleman Alastair met their match in the last game, one of their opponents playing off 6, but not to worry, we had already recorded 3 wins. LS seniors WON 3 and half to 2 and a half.
I found Axe Cliff an "interesting" course with a few too many blind holes for my own liking, but it was made up for with the exceptionally warm welcome we were given and the food was top draw.
