OH SO CLOSE!!!!
Wes Allen, John Parkinson, Tim Edwards and Henry Edwards represented Long Sutton in Sunday’s SGU Trounson Trophy, a team strokeplay event with best 3 of 4 nett scores to count. An early score of +12 for Oake Manor 1 looked as though it could be enough to win it in very difficult conditions until Wes came in with a magnificent 1 under par 71. Wes was closely followed by John Parkinson with a 3 over 74, meaning either Tim or Henry needed 10 over or better for Long Sutton to take a late lead. Tim struggled in the conditions and shot 13 over 85 but Henry battled on and came in with a 10 over 82 giving a best 3 score of +11. Other team scores were coming in but no one was challenging and we waited for the last 2 teams of Taunton & Pickeridge and Clevedon 1. T & P’s first 2 scores gave them 12 over and Clevedon’s first 2 were 18 over....still looking good. T & P’s next 2 scores gave them a best 3 score of +18, Clevedon’s next card gave them a score of +23. It was all looking good until the very last card was handed in…… level par. It meant that Clevedon’s worst score of +14 was dropped and they ended with + 9, pipping Long Sutton for the Trounson Trophy by 2 shots.
Our team still carried away the runners up prize, The Windwhistle Trophy, and nobody could match Wes’s score as he took the President’s Shield.
Massive congratulations to all 4 players, none of whom had played Clevedon before.
