On Thursday 18th August we entertained a team of Axe Cliff seniors for our return leg of the 2015 fixture , having drawn 3-3 on their course earlier in the summer. We had a warm and sunny afternoon which was perfect for good golf and that’s what was dished up by both teams
Game 1- Glyn Ottery and Steve Hollaway got us off to a great start convincingly beating their opponents with whom they were very evenly matched on handicaps, by 6 and 5.
Game 2- Dave Butcher and Len Collin unfortunately came up against a 24 handicapper Bob Graham who was red hot on the day, made regular pars and hardly missed a putt (including some long putts from the edge of the green) making things difficult for both home players. As Dave said afterwards he played more like 12 than 24! Our side finally losing the game by 5 and 3.
Match 3- Myself and Peter Hill had a very hard fought game against the away captain Rob and his partner Leighton. We were 2 down after 2 holes due to long par putts by Leighton, but slowly reeled them back in and went to 2 up, only to be caught again and we were back to all square on the 16th due to more very long putts from both away players. I then won the 17th with a par( my 6th of the game, oh and I also had a birdie on the 4th). Peter was on the 18th green in three and the opposition and I were just off the back and they left their putts way short leaving Peter to lag up to within a few inches and tap in for a 5 and close the game out. Final score we won 2 up. Peter told me he had played 36 holes on Wednesday competing in two seniors doubles matches and was rather knackered by the end of our match (Sorry but its called getting old Peter).
Game 4- Rich Bartin and John Thomas also had a tight game, although Rich was very pleased to find he was finally playing an opponent who gave him shots for a change, as Tony Strong was off a 6 h/cap. Our duo played very well together and came out on top winning 2up.
Game 5- Tom Timms and David Kennedy again playing a very well matched pairing took all the Axe Cliff team threw at them and in Toms words threw it straight back, came out stronger and won by a very good margin of 4 and 3.
Game 6- our esteemed Vice Captain Chris Hockey and Peter Bell again had a ding dong contest against two lower handicappers, going 2 down and the getting back to all square on the 16th only to have their hopes of pulling off a brilliant recovery dashed by losing both the last two holes and so losing by 2 down.
Final score Long Sutton 4 - Axe Cliff 2
My congratulations to all the team on their efforts both winners and losers, also for the welcome you gave your opposition pairs. The Axe Cliff Captain Rob remarked after the game that our fixture was one of those his seniors section look forward to the most as we always have such friendly and enjoyable matches. For that Thank you all.
