Winter Knockout Rnd 2 – Long Sutton v Bullpits 14.12.14
Finding a team in December is not easy! There is so much going on, what with parties, turkey trots etc. In the end the team consisted of Edwards, Ray, Tim, Rupert and myself, Steves, Stopforth, Cousins and Uzzell, Tyler, Sean and Sarah. I was relieved to find my last man in Steve Cousins. Becky had set Sunday aside for baking instead of golf, so I set off Late Night Christmas Shopping with a light heart, until the Uzzells wavered…”If you have lots wanting to play? Already one late night and a Ball tonight” but they are made of stern stuff. Sean had mentioned Darts Final Saturday night but assured me he would be fine. He would have been but they won the darts! Port was mentioned!! We arrived at Wincanton to uncheerful news…the clubhouse would be closing at 3.30. Would we get back in in time to warm up from Wincanton’s wind? All the Bullpits men were out on the putting green, honing their stroke. I remember how many times a Bullpits man has won the Freeman Trophy Putting comp. Shouldn’t we be out practicing? I decide better not to doubt my team’s ability by suggesting it. Let them keep warm and wait behind glass! Once out, judging from clues on the way round, Sean and Steve were not getting on well. One down I thought. Steve and Rupert were already in, winners, waiting to see how we all did. Tim and Tyler had lost. Ray and I went on to win 4 and 2, now all depending on the Uzzells and Steve and Sean. As Steve and Sean appeared we expected them to say they had lost, but no…smiles on their faces, playing up 19! From being down dormy 4 they had fought their way back to level. Sadly, they lost on 19 (Sean said the port ran out!) but what an exciting experience to put in the bag. Well done both. Finally, Bless the Uzzells! They won on 15 and tipped the match to us. Well, I never thought we would win, but an early Christmas present! Well done everyone. Watch out for the sign up sheet for our next round against Wincanton during January. Neutral course and date to be decided.
