It finally happened! Only six months late. The Freeman Trophy Day is the 3 Counties End of Season Celebration…all the season’s trophies are presented, the now 12 teams play for the John Freeman Trophy and the individual prizes associated with that.
Unfortunately, last October at Cricket St. Thomas the heavens opened and at 7.30 as the day started to roll out, despite their best efforts, greenkeepers and management had to close the course, so this Saturday was a re-enactment, but with a difference…the day was dry, hardly any wind and with enough light for all the teams to make it round and still be able to track their ball!
The winners of the Trophy on the day were Bulbury Woods with 306 points, second Yeovil with 303 and third Long Sutton with 301…really well contested. Ten teams played this time. We were the proud recipients of the League Division One Winners Shield and Caroline Hunter won Best Lady Overall and our Best in Team. We nearly won the Joe Harring Trophy as well, (Runners Up Div. 1). We had it presented to us…but by mistake! We were second. We had to hand it over to the rightful winners…Cricket St. Thomas.
There was a moment of sadness as we recalled last year’s Freemans Trophy when Steve Henstridge, ‘Skinny’ of Folke and Maxine from Wincanton swapped outfits. She wore his suit and he squeezed into her tight dress and high heels for charity. Unfortunately, Skinny passed away this summer. In the past Mike Barker of Folke had awarded a cup for the Overall Best Score on the day and he said Folke would now like it to be named the Steve Henstridge Skinny Cup in his memory.
The day was rounded off with a delicious 2 course carvery in the marquee.
It was a really good end to the season and to my tenure as Captain of the Three Counties League. Graham prompted our joining the League in 2011 when Halstock left and asked me to be Captain. I was surprised to be asked and quite apprehensive, not knowing what it would entail. I soon found out the 3 Counties is something else! But I have thoroughly enjoyed it and had masses of fun. The League as a whole is quite relaxed and fun and I have laughed so much. Graham wanted it to be an opportunity for men, women and juniors to all play together and to draw more people in to matchplay. I think we have achieved that. Gleaned from the records, some of those who have played and in no particular order have been…Margaret and George Bennett, Kath Rushton, Caroline Lumley-Frank, Sarah and Steve Uzzell, Sam Clarke, Cameron and Colin Barrett, David Edwards, Sean Bennett, Mark Healey, Sandra and Rob Ford, Paul Watts, Steve and Becky Cousins, Mike Scoble, Nigel Brighouse, Rupert Edwards, Henry Edwards, Leith Purdy, Luke Nutland, Jim McColl, Steve Stopforth, Sean Monaghan, Sandra Basford, Ray Edwards, Sonia and Stephen Banks, Dave and Angela Baker, Hilary and Malcolm Dennes, Julie and Ian Taylor, Bridget Caddy, Mary Marshall, Connie Stolworthy, Stacie Watts, Mandy and Malcolm Head, Sylvie and Rod, Norman, John Drummond, Eliza and Alex, Joce Dunevein, Jean Padfield, Hayden Gibson, Brian and Gwen, Hughie, Jim Lawrence, Pam Frith, Franco, John English, Mike Rees, Julian Odierno, Rich Bartin, Roger Stone, Jeff Price, Steve Southgate, Tyler Lennox-Gordon, George Ceely, Nick and Ruben Stacey, Chris Binding, Ann and Mike Mcrae, Alec Lyon, Phil Lock, Frank Pengelly, Graham Load, Mark Lawlor, Dave Gibbs, James Todd, Kev Purdy, Pat and John Whitehead, Amie Stamp, Carol and John Searl, Carole and John Paterson, Frank Penny, Nick Dennis, Judith Fox, Vanessa Hayes, Luke and Adrian Nutland, Chris Gingell, John Jeanes, Richard Dore, John Evans, Jamie Brodie, Lesley and Martin Hawkins, Mike Poole, John Blackwell, Richard and Angela Body, John and Valerie Thomas, Christine Turner, Val Fraser, Richard Overson, Denise Tomblin, John Pearson, Ian Jackaman, Jon Elliot, Steve and Jo Cook, Will Bingham, Caroline Hunter, Roy Parmiter, Rachel and Robin Ewbank, Katharine and Mike Stringer, Tim Edwards, Alec Radwell and Bill (putting comp.), myself and of course GRAHAM, which I thinks makes 124 different players. Wow! Amazing. Thank you everyone for all your support. Wonderful memories. I now hand the Captaincy over to Angela Baker to build her own memory bank and look forward to the fun-filled golf she will bring us.
