3 Counties League.....Freeman Trophy…..Saturday, 12th October, 2013

All ten clubs in the Three Counties League played in the League’s end-of-season grand finale on Saturday, playing for the Freeman Trophy, making a total of 120 playing on the day. The main aim from start to finish is to have fun, but of course it is competitive as well, hence the barracking on the first tee, as the teams tee off. First tee is 8.00 and with the rain that morning, a gloomy start but the sun soon came out and it became a glorious day. At the meal in the evening it was announced that Cannington A were the winners, 249 pts, Long Sutton second, 245 pts and Folke third, 240 pts – a really close result. One of the Cannington players said afterwards how pleased they were to win. They come to have fun so to win was the icing on the cake for them. Even more surprising for them too, as the Trophy was initially awarded to Long Sutton, only for there to be a recount in true 3 Counties fashion and the Trophy was re-awarded in gales of laughter and even louder applause! A great evening. Further Long Sutton prizes were given to Angela Baker for the Individual Team Prize and the Ladies Prize and to Sarah Uzzell for the Longest Drive. Thankyou to Tommy and Steve Uzzell for acting as starters and thankyou to Alec Radwell for his putting competition, won by Chris Burt of Bullpits - £50 to charity and £50 to Chris.

The Season’s Trophies were awarded: Long Sutton Runners Up in the Winter Knockout to Folke. Folke won Div. 1, 110 points and Long Sutton Runners Up, 100 points. In Div. 2 Cannington A first, 85 and Charminster second, 83, meaning the teams in Division 1 next year will be Folke, Long Sutton, Wincanton, Cannington A and Charminster. Folke and Long Sutton joint winners of the Div. 1 Reserve Cup.

The draw for the Winter Knockout was made…Long Sutton have to play Folke by the end of January on a neutral course and the first round of the Winter Salva will be at Long Sutton in November. Dates to be arranged.

As ever, the Three Counties has been great fun this year. Big thanks to everyone at Long Sutton who work so hard to make the Long Sutton experience a good one and particular thanks to those who have played this year. I think the practice has helped…several of you have had big handicap cuts!

On my reckoning these are those who have played – myself, Ray, Henry, Rupert Edwards, Angela and Dave Baker, Sarah and Steve Uzzell, Gwen and Brian Clarke, Sylvie and Rod Taylor, Eliza Vail, Jean Padfield, Sam Clarke, Nigel Brighouse, Stacie Watts, Sandra Basford, Sandra Ford, Sean Monaghan, Norman, Hughie, John Drummond, Julian Lawrence and Odierno, Mandy, Joce, Steve Cousins, Michael Scoble, Sonia and Steve Banks, Bridget Caddy, Julie Taylor, Roger Stone, Hilary Dennes, Jim McColl, the Legend, Steve Stopforth, Luke Nutland…with handicaps ranging from 5 to 27, (when the maximum allowed is 24.) Apologies for anyone I have missed and thank you all again. Redoubled efforts next year!
