Winter Salva at Long Sutton Sun. 19th Feb. 2017 ~ Report

Winter Salva at Long Sutton Sun. 19th Feb. 2017

The day went well: no rain…and delicious steak and ale pie after.  A winner! Thank you Roger.  As for the golf and the chat…the usual.  I heard ‘You’ve got the wrong bag.  You’ve forgotten your clubs!’ from Sean, as I arrived for the tee-off with a rather large handbag.  At least I was teeing off further down the order...with fewer people to watch.  For those at the beginning with a 40 plus audience it must be really intimidating.  Our first is not the wide open space the other clubs are used to.  Ball after ball went left, down into the trees and when Derek, the Folke Captain, skied his drive a roar went up from his playing partners.  You could almost hear the silent prayers: ‘Please don’t let that be me!’  This would only be one shot though.  There were plenty of brilliant ones as well.  I saw one Folke man put his ball feet from the pin on the 6th  and yet he was only half way to the ladies tee on the 16th.  I know…that’s a bus drive from the men’s tee, so some could count it a good shot, but still, it seemed to typify the day:  in the trees one minute and inches from a hole-in-one the next.  The highest score was from Ray Cavill (Wincanton) 34 points.  The highest score at Cannington had been 38 points and 37 at Wincanton.

On the day, Long Sutton scored 282, Folke 280, Cannington 272 and Wincanton 252.  This gave totals after 3 rounds - Folke 897, Long Sutton 880, Wincanton 856  and Cannington 835.  At the start of the day we were lying third, 19 points behind Folke, and we ended the day lying second, 17 points behind Folke.  The Final will be at Folke on Saturday, 4th March.  Please sign the sheet in the corridor if you would like to play that day.  Can we close the gap?  I know we will give it a good try!

Thank you to all the team, Nigel, Denise (our highest scorer with 33 points), Angela and Dave, Caroline Hunter, Sean, Tim, John Pearson, Sarah and Steve and last, but not least, John Blackwell.  Much appreciated John.  Thank you.

3 Counties Winter Knockout Semi-Final 29.1.17

3 Counties Winter Knockout Semi-Final 29.1.17 – I had my doubts about this one on several counts: we were playing Sturminster Marshall, whom we had not played before, on the Newton Course, both following and during rain, but worst of all, the day after Burns Night!  I thought half my team would arrive clouded in whisky fumes, but I need not have worried.  They are a gutsy lot and perhaps the whisky helped.  Caroline Hunter did not get to bed until 2 a.m. but she and John Jeanes took their opposition to the 19th hole and won.  Sarah had a fantastic round and she and Steve won, as did Sean and John Pearson. Sean confused the opposition by playing as a 10 handicapper at the beginning before reverting to the norm.  They were the last pair out and with no constraints on handicap order came up against a lower handicapped pair and made their shots count.  Tim and Nigel lost after a valiant fight, as did Ray and I, so a win 3 and 2.  Well done everyone and thank you to the weather gods for holding the worst of the rain back!  We now meet Folke in the Final.  They are the traditional winners so watch this space!  Details to be arranged.

3 Counties Winter Salva - Wincanton Round - 14.1.17

3 Counties Winter Salva - Wincanton Round - 14.1.17

Well that’s a few more brain cells lost – killed off by the freezing cold at Wincanton on Saturday!   Thank you to Nigel, Angela and Dave, Valerie and John Thomas, Sean, John Pearson, Tim and Ray, Caroline Hunter and Sandra Ford.  You turned up, despite the  forecast.  We did end up last on the day…but only by one point…and are now third.  Folke are in the lead on 617, Wincanton have 604, we have 598 and Cannington 563.  All to play for on our own course on Sunday, 19th February.  Any volounteers please sign the sheet in the corridor.  Team of 12 needed to play stableford format.

3 Counties Winter Salva 19.11.16

3 Counties Winter Salva 19.11.16 – Thank you to the Long Sutton team of twelve who arrived at Cannington in chilly sunshine for the first round of the Salva, joining up with teams from Folk, Wincanton and Cannington themselves. 144 players to get through in stableford format before nightfall.  It was touch and go as the light fell, but hunger spurred them on!  The course played well, despite the heavy rain the week before and must have suited our players as Long Sutton gained the most points…319, Folke were second, on 305, Wincanton third and Cannington last.  Top score in our team went to Nigel Brighouse with 37 points.  The best 10 scores make up the team score.  I was looking at being dropped off the sheet until Steve, ever the gentleman, came in with one point less than me, so saving the Captain’s face.  Well done everyone…Dave and Angela, Nigel, John Pearson, Steve Cousins, John Jeanes, Franco, Sean, Tim, Sarah and Steve and myself.

3 Counties Winter Knockout 19.11.16

3 Counties Winter Knockout 19.11.16 – How did we manage to find the good weather gap at Wincanton between the deluge on Friday and Storm Angus on Saturday? Obviously karma for being beaten by the fog earlier this month at Cricket St. Thomas. For Cricket St. Thomas we made a team easily: not so for our second try at Wincanton. Sarah - Watford at Home, John Jeanes - Yeovil at Home, Sandra - struck down by sciatica and no John Thomas. At the eleventh hour, Steve and Becky said they could play, leaving Graham waiting in the wings in a supporting role, to step in if needs be (provided it did not rain!).

I am glad to say the team came up trumps. No!...I am glad to say our team did the trick. Angela and Dave and Tim and Sean settled their matches decisively. I was hopeful of a third win when I saw Ray and Valerie teeing off first on the 18th, but sadly they lost. Ray said how well Valerie had played. Steve Uzzell and I lost on the 16th, but Steve and Becky won 3 and 2, giving us that vital third win. I was so glad for them both...and for us! We now have to play Sturminster Marshall in the semi-final before the end of February.
