What a day/evening to remember!
Almost a week on and I’m sat recalling the conversation I had with Paul Deeprose confirming I had one of the 3 tee times to play as much golf as daylight would allow and John E Morgan wanted to play. Saturday arrived and my excitment level brewed! Myself, Stuart Hodder and Wes Allen all had a tee time looming! John had a new caddie especially for the event - Pete Burch had the job of steering John around the course and carrying his bag.
John E Morgan, for those unfamiliar with him, is a Sky Sports On course commentator, covering PGA/European and Euro Pro tours. He's also an ex professional player having held both PGA and European tour cards, narrowly missing out on the John Deere classic, losing in a playoff. He's known for his whitty comments and Bristolian accent!
John is a true gent, we had a great round of golf against him, Wes and I losing 1 down through 15 holes, the banter and micky taking all around was worth the charitable donation in itself.
On to the evening, I must say the steak and ale pie was delicious, a huge thank you to Paul and his team for catering for us. Ablely supported by David Haynes (PGA Professional from Burnham and Berrow) and Rick Metcalfe (Ex President of Somerset Golf Union), David walked us through John's career from Amateur Golf and representing England in a team with Rose, Westwood, Donald and Casey to name a few, right upto what he now does for Sky, intertwined with stories along the way, some humours (most of them), some serious and some heart touching - especially the John Daly story.
John then spent time after the talk mingling with the members, answering questions, joking and telling further anecdotes. I'd like to thank Paul Deeprose and Tommy Tulk for arranging the visit, it was another great evening at the club.
There are lots of events in planning stages for the coming 12 months - if you missed out on this one I’m sure there will be another evening that will be equally as entertaining for you all to join in and attend.
See you all on the course soon.
