Levellers Blog Final Update 06/09/2016 - the Levellers finished off the season in great style by beating our sister club, Orchardleigh B 4 -1
Despite the absence of the Captain, the Levellers finished off the season in great style by beating our sister club, Orchardleigh B 4 -1.This ensures our survival in Division 5, eventually finishing halfway, which after being bottom for most of the season was a tremendous result.
Many thanks to all those that played in the team, whether it was for one game or all 10!!
Thanks to the greenstaff, caterers, Graham and Felicity for making the home games so much more enjoyable and the compliments over the condition of the course and greens were unanimous from all the visiting clubs.
Thanks to the club Captain, John Williams, who supplied us with the tee shot of the season at Wheathill where his divot went further than his ball, estimated at 5 yards, (but still halved the hole)!
Thanks to Nick Stacey who has a couple of fine young golfers coming through the junior ranks in Ruben Stacey and Lewis Coward, both played a couple of games and thoroughly enjoyed the matches - I am sure they will be playing next year regularly.
Thanks again to all involved with the team and hopefully we will do it all again next season.
The Levellers continued with their winning streak, beating Brean A 4 -1 on Sat 20th August. It was very windy and the visitors found the opening drive very tricky as several ended up on the 15th or on the driving range! None of the matches got passed the 15th and the 4 winning scores were 6&5 (2 games), 5&4 and 4&3, the losing pair for the Levellers unfortunately ended up losing by 7&6.
The course and greens were again in excellent condition and the visitors could not cope with the speed of the greens so thank to all the green staff!
Brunch was lovely and again many thanks to the catering staff who "fitted" us in on an extremely busy day.
Long Sutton Levellers entertained top of the table (and the Avalon leagues highest point scorers) Weston B, on Saturday and came out with a fantastic win 3 & 2!
The final result could have easily been 5 - 0 as 3 matches went to the 18th and ended up with Weston winning the final hole to halve 2 of the matches and nick the other. The win leaves the Levellers still on the bottom of the league but only by 2pts and with a game in hand are confident of staying up.
The course was in superb condition and every player from Weston commented on how good the course looked and how true the greens were - the best ever in their experience of visiting Long Sutton.
This Saturday the Levellers play host to Brean A followed by Orchardleigh on the 27 th and are must win games.
Long Sutton Levellers beat a strong Wheathill A side at home on Saturday. The course was in great shape and thankfully so was the vast majority of the golf from the Levellers players. Three pairs were victorious, one game was halved and with only one loss, which converts to a 9 points to 4.5 win in favour of Long Sutton.
The Levellers have 3 home games remaining and need to win all three if they are to stay up and have started on a positive note.
The Levellers played host to Weston A on Saturday and had an excellent result, winning 3.5 to 1.5, which gave Long Sutton 9 points to Westons 4.5 points.
The weather was dry and considering all the rain the course endured earlier on in the week it played very well. The greens were on the slow side but the ball rolled truly and the Weston team were all very complimentary over the course conditions.
The food was very tasty and just what you wanted after an enjoyable match, made all the better by England thumping Australia earlier in the day at rugby!
The next match is away at Orchardleigh on July 2nd.
The Levellers travelled to Brean on Sunday and came away with a very creditable draw 2.5pts each which gives the Levellers 8.5 pts to Breans 6.
The weather was dry, very windy, bright and sunny which made the course tricky , especially with so many of the drains and ditches in play.
The background of the FunFair in full flow , coupled with Jerry Lee Lewis at 95 decibels made the experience even more enjoyable but thankfully only one Levellers player visited the Fairground with his tee shot on the 6th!
Glyn Ottery and Nigel Griffiths, John Drummond and Graham Load provided the two wins with John English and Nick Stacey earning a hard won half in a game that ebbed and flowed till the 18th.
The next game is on Saturday, away to Wheathill A.
Long Sutton Levellers travelled to Weston on Saturday to play against their A team. The weather was terrible on the drive over but thankfully the sun shone and it remained dry for the rest of the afternoon but a blustery wind and fast greens made for tricky conditions.
It was a close fought match with Weston just coming out on top three games to two. Two of the games could have gone our way but it just wasn't to be and The Levellers finally came away losing 8 points to 6, so over all not a bad start to the season.
The next game is in two weeks time and again away at Weston, this time playing the B side.
B Team Blog Update 24.05.16
Tall Pines Away
Not a good blog this time we suffered a heavy defeat against Tall Pines away we lost 4 1/2 to 1/2.
The one shining light was the half we got from Martin and Nick. The food and hospitality was excellent as was the
course. Onwards and upwards.
A close game against Wells G. C. at the weekend 2 1/2 to 2 1/2 (6-81/2) we had a chance to snatch a win but unfortunately left the putt in the jaws of the hole. The food was excellent as usual thanks to all the staff. The coursewas good condition as per usual we all know the greens are not back to there best but they are getting there pretty quick. We look forwardBto our next match on the 22nd of May against Tall Pines away. Onwards and upwards
Long Sutton Stags V Tall Pines - Sat. 23rd April
A very close match which ended 3-2 to us (8-6). The day started well with a full English breakfast which was excellent, coffee and tea. Thanks to the catering staff. Back to the match, all close games 2 matches going to the 18th green the other 2 won by us 2&1. Unfortunately myself and my partner who shall remain nameless (chris binding) lost3&2. The course was in excellent condition as per usual. The rivalry between the 2 clubs was warm and friendly. We look forward to visiting Tall Pines at the end of May.
Played Wells GC on Saturday 2nd April 2016.
Unfortunately team lost 3-2 which is not too bad as the points turn out to 8-6 in favour of Wells.
Course was in good nick for the time of year, and the food and hospitality was excellent.
A good start to our 2016 campaign. I do not want to mention the winners by name as it might, no it will, make them big headed.
As I said a decent start to the new season.
Onwards and upwards.
A Team Blog
A team vs Stockwood Vale
Another away game and another tough result – the team went down 4 – 1
Congratulations to Andy Moray and Nick Northey, their winning run from Taunton and Pickerage continued with a 3&2 win. Barry Harding and Wesley Allen lost narrowly on 18 – a good game with a great fight back!
Gary French and myself we’re involved in a titanic battle, the first 6 holes being won with a birdie, unfortunately we came out 2nd best and lost 2&1, Sean Bennett and Peter Burch lost 4 &3 as did Allan Pilkington and Rupert Edwards.
We now have 6 weeks off before the next challenge at Burnham and Berrow. Plenty of time for us to gets some much needed golf under our belts, build some confidence and for me to sharpen the pencil and get our strategy spot on.
A team match result 1
On a day of changeable weather a squad of 12 made the trip to Oake Manor for our first match of the new season.
The Oake course conditions weren't up to their usual high standards due to maintenance work that had been done.
Good golf was played by all groups but we weren't able to hole the putts that would gain us points.
Unfortunately the result didn't go our way and we lost 5-0.
Still we have a chance to redeem ourselves this weekend at Taunton and Pickerage.

Levellers win v Frome B
Levellers v Frome B
Long Sutton Levellers played host on Saturday to the Division 5 League leaders, Frome B, and won convincingly 3 games to 1 with one game halved.
The weather was again kind with sunny intervals and only a fresh westerly wind to content with, but at least the rain kept well away!.
The winning pairs were the evergreen Rob Ford & Nigel Griffiths (5&4), Nick Dennis & Dave Baker (2&1) and the ever reliable, and currently unbeaten pairing, of John English & Geoff Monks (3&2).
Rob Load and Chris Slocombe had a very tight game that could have gone either way and a half was probably a fair result in the end.
Gus Phillips and Tim Forward also had a very close game but on this occasion they lost by a hole, just failing to win the 18th which would have secured the half.
The next game is at home again on June 20th to Stockwood Vale C.
