Club Captain's Welcome
Long Sutton Club Captain 2019 Paul Wills
Welcome to all, members, visiting golfers and anyone paying a social visit to Long Sutton Golf Club.
The Club proprietors are Graham and Felicity Holloway who still maintain a keen interest in the club assisted primarily by our Club Manager, Paul Deeprose and our PGA professional, Andrew Hayes.
I started playing golf in 1994 at Chedington Court Golf Club where I went on to be Club Champion 3 times and served as Handicap/Competition secretary and Avalon Captain until the club closed in 2010. After an 18 month spell at Cricket st Thomas golf club I joined Long Sutton. A decision I should have made in 2010, I was all ready a customer of Andrew Hayes the club professional having bought 2 sets of irons from him, my only wish was I’d listened to him when he was trying to convince me to join the club back then. Having finally signed the forms and paid my membership fees I was quickly introduced to the Avalon A team captain and signed up to help the club, that year we built some foundations and following this we got promoted into Division 1. Fast forward 2 years and I was captaining the team in the Avalon League and the Somerset Bowl, this is when the most humbling event in my golfing career happened, John Paterson asked me to be his vice-captain and future club captain, an opportunity I couldn’t turn down.
When I’m not at Long Sutton playing golf, i’m either representing Somerset, playing in county events or refereeing an event somewhere.
At 27 years old, Long Sutton is a relatively young club but, particularly over the last few years, has matured beautifully into a quality golf course and provides an excellent test for golfers of all abilities. Water features on 2 holes and the strategically placed drainage ditches makes sure that your course management needs to be spot on. The course is laid out so that you return to the Clubhouse after playing 9, 15 or 18 holes and there are no Winter tees or greens.
We have very active Ladies and Seniors sections ably captained by Sarah Uzell and Bill Bond respectively and together with our men we total over 500 members. Aside from the Seniors and Ladies midweek competitions we also accommodate our other 5 day members with qualifying competitions on many Fridays.
If you are competitive, there are many individual and team competitions run throughout the year plus 3 successful Avalon League teams, recently winning Divisions 2 and 5 as well as a very successful Three Counties team. The Ladies and Seniors also have their own league teams offering many friendly but competitive fixtures.
Throughout the Summer months Wednesday night is Club Night, a great opportunity for new and existing members to come together and join in some fun competitions over 9 holes. There are different competition formats each week and to top it all our chef puts on a very reasonably priced Club Night menu. My Captain’s Day will be on 15th June where I hope you can all join in what I intend to be an entertaining day and evening.
Our club charity is St Margaret’s Hospice and this year marks 26 years of our support. The St Margaret’s Hospice Charity Day in 2019 is on 5th July but I will be looking at many other ways to raise additional money for this most worthy charity throughout the year.
I’m sure that all new and existing members, visiting golfers and social visitors will enjoy the Long Sutton hospitality. If you want to seek me out I would be delighted to sit and have a chat.
