Chairman’s Mid Summer Report

Chairman’s Mid Summer Report

It’s raining outside as I write this report so it must be mid-summer!

A few weeks ago everything looked rosy for the Avalon League B team who looked to be walking away with Division 5, unfortunately the petals have fallen off recently and it looks like another season in this division. The Avalon A side have not had a good season so far although things may have turned the corner with an away win at Taunton Vale last week. The C side have used many players giving them a taste of league golf and what it entails. After the success in last year’s Somerset Bowl on reaching the final, we all had high hopes of going one better this year unfortunately we lost last Friday at Oake Manor to Wheathill in the quarter final. All that is left to play for at county level is a Pickeridge Bowl quarter final match against Mendip at Taunton Vale in a couple of weeks time.

The success of the year so far has been Gill Edwards and her assortment of players who have turned out in the Three Counties League and are at present sitting second to top of their division with 2 games in hand. On a personal note it is good to see George and Margaret Bennett taking part in this team for without them the club would not exist today.

The Seniors Section is going from strength to strength and we wish them well in their quest to win the Seniors Bowl: they have also just run a very successful championship and evening presentation evening which was enjoyed by all.

The Ladies Section still continues to thrive and they too have held some very well supported Open events during the season.

Juniors are re-building but things seem to be getting there with some good individual results being recorded. Stacie Watts continues her success with County Girls and is looking forward to taking part in the 3 day SW Intercounties Jamboree at Honiton.

The St Margaret’s Hospice Day was another great success with so many people from within and outside the club taking part and supporting the day. I keep getting asked how much have we made this year: it takes time to collect all the money in and pay any outstanding bills, but it looks like we shall be around what we achieved last year of £19,500 so watch this space for the final total.

Sean Monaghan has carved and donated the wonderful Golf Ball sculpture on the 5th hole: our thanks to him for giving our club such a wonderful feature.

People from all around are coming to play our course and commenting on the way it has improved and developed: it is a great credit to our green keeping staff and also to Graham & Felicity for the funding towards these improvements.

Keep enjoying your golf and let’s keep Long Sutton the friendly welcoming club it has grown to by reputation.

The 5th Pond Sculpture

The 5th Pond Sculpture

Sean Monaghan stone mason, keen golfer and Long Sutton member has, as a pastime for the last 5 years, been carefully sculpturing the new golf ball that is now in place in the 5th pond. Sean has kindly donated the sculptured ball to your club.

The ball is naturally coloured stone similar to Portland Stone but is in fact sculptured out of Anstrude Roche Claire (Oolitic limestone, Middle Jurassic, Bathonian stratum) which is quarried in Bierry-les-Belles-Fontaines, France. The tee and base are hamstone (a Jurassic limestone from the Toarcian, or Upper Lias, stage) from Ham Hill, Somerset

As a point of interest ~ In 2000 Anstrude Roche Claire was used instead of Portland stone for the new Ionic portico, the main gateway to the courtyard at the British Museum causing a major controversy.

A thirty tonne crane was bought in to lift into the pond a two tonne block of concrete (cast by the green keeping staff) onto which the Hamstone base, tee and ball were placed. The ball and tee are secured to the base with a stainless steel rod.
