The 5th Pond Sculpture

The 5th Pond Sculpture

Sean Monaghan stone mason, keen golfer and Long Sutton member has, as a pastime for the last 5 years, been carefully sculpturing the new golf ball that is now in place in the 5th pond. Sean has kindly donated the sculptured ball to your club.

The ball is naturally coloured stone similar to Portland Stone but is in fact sculptured out of Anstrude Roche Claire (Oolitic limestone, Middle Jurassic, Bathonian stratum) which is quarried in Bierry-les-Belles-Fontaines, France. The tee and base are hamstone (a Jurassic limestone from the Toarcian, or Upper Lias, stage) from Ham Hill, Somerset

As a point of interest ~ In 2000 Anstrude Roche Claire was used instead of Portland stone for the new Ionic portico, the main gateway to the courtyard at the British Museum causing a major controversy.

A thirty tonne crane was bought in to lift into the pond a two tonne block of concrete (cast by the green keeping staff) onto which the Hamstone base, tee and ball were placed. The ball and tee are secured to the base with a stainless steel rod.

Mixed Open Competition Report

4BBB Stableford Mixed Open Competition on Wednesday 15th June

56 couples entered our 4BBB Stableford Mixed Open Competition on Wednesday 15th June - visitors from over 20 different clubs were represented. Everyone really enjoyed the day & fortunately the weather was kind. The course looked fantastic & played well. The Thai fishcakes were a big hit with the players after the game, chosen by many from a delicious & varied menu provided by our great chefs.

I would like to thank everyone for their donations of raffle prizes & the generosity of players buying tickets. A fantastic £195.00 was raised for my charity, Alzheimer's Society, topped up to £200.00 by Roger Stone for wearing 'outrageous' trousers on the course!!

Many thanks to Judy Richards for her wonderful organisation & beautiful flower arrangements & all the ladies & seniors who helped towards the smooth running of the day.

We had 5 two spot winners Jim McColl, Richard Agnew, John Williams, Brian Clarke & Andy Macey.
The Longest Drive for Ladies on hole 10 was won by Julie Kinsey from Wells GC, Longest Drive for Men on hole 16 by John Williams.
Sue Hockley from Enmore won nearest the pin on hole 17 & Peter Foster from Ashley Wood on hole 12.

1st, 2nd & 3rd place for home players were all won with 39 points but Sheena Smith & Roger Stone had the best back 9 to secure 1st prize, Angela & Dave Baker took 2nd prize & Aideen Roche & Chris Sutton 3rd.

Mixed Friendly - Sunday 5th June - v Bridport. Away.

Mixed Friendly - Sunday 5th June - v Bridport. Away.

The notice is now on the board for our next mixed friendly match. Please add names and handicap information if you would like to play. I am considering mixing our pairings instead of running with the usual format of couples/partners playing together - unless people feel strongly about this of course. I am waiting for confirmation of the costs from Bridport and will add this information to the eventual team list.

These friendlies are a great way to ease yourself into inter-club matches. They are always very relaxed and great fun - plus you get a round of golf and a meal for a bargain amount of money! If you have not played in one before, please do put your name on the list. Unfortunately, I cant play that day, but I'm sure all those who go will have a great day.

Any queries, please contact me on 07841 816841.

Many thanks for your support

Vanessa
