Club Captain 2019/20 - Angela Baker
As the Club Captain for Long Sutton Golf Club I would like to express a warm welcome to you all. There are so many reasons why it is a privilege and a great honour to have been chosen as the Club Captain none more so than because I am the first female Club Captain in our history. I will represent our club with pride and passion and ensure I uphold all our club and golfing values to help take this great golf club to an even higher level.
My appointment to this prestigious role not only signifies a change in culture and mindset but it has set the tone and tenor for this club.
This Club is a forward thinking and modern organisation where the pace of change has been simply breath-taking. Though it is obvious to say, some change can be disorientating and frustrating, but our biggest asset is the momentum and positivity we have amongst our members and staff. There is no doubt the past few months could have brought this club and business to its knees but instead it has acted as a catalyst for course improvements, clubhouse regeneration and optimism.
We now see a Club that is flourishing and on the up. These attributes and benefits to the Club have come because of the investment from the owners, Stuart and Anne Hodder. They have taken the bull by the horns and made sweeping changes. They have built upon the firm foundations from the past and have brought an exciting vision to the Club. Not only do we have a vision, but they have already achieved substantial change. These are incredibly exciting times for the Club with improvements coming on a daily and weekly basis.
I have been playing golf and a member at the club for about 10 years now and throughout that period the one thing that stands out above all else is the friendliness and camaraderie of the members.
You are assured of a warm welcome at our club by our friendly staff in the Pro Shop, Bar and Restaurant.
Long Sutton Golf Club has always been an enjoyable test of golf. The improvements to the course now present similar challenges from yesteryear but now we enjoy impressive treelines defining the holes, refurbished ditches and ponds, several new bunkers and hole designs and immaculately prepared greens. However when you play you can be assured of wonderful views, interesting wildlife and a beautiful landscape.
Whilst Stuart and Anne have spent considerable time and money to enhance the course in the months since they have been here they could not of done this on their own. The Head Green Keeper Johnnie Tullk and his team have worked wonders in such a short time which it is very much appreciated by the members and visitors alike. The feedback from the golfers who have played the course recently have provided relentless compliments and accolades paying tribute to the improvements and the all-round golfing experience.
I would like to formally welcome Richard Antrobus, Head Professional (Director of golf). Richard has over 30 years’ experience in golf and is available to discuss and help you to improve your golf either as individuals or in small groups. His experience and knowledge of the game and the products he sells is of the highest standard and his brilliant reputation has undoubtedly resulted in more members coming our way.
Our nine-bay flood lit driving range has been refurbished which now gives us the ability to practise all year round. We are now able to practice or have lessons in a more professional and comfortable environment even if the weather is poor and through the evenings during the winter months.
Its not all about the golf!! The club house has not been left off Stuart and Anne list of improvements!
Updating and modernising the club house has resulted in wholesale change in the bar, function rooms and restaurant. We now have a brilliant patio which looks out onto the stunning views of the course. It is fair to say that every area of our hospitality area has been revamped, rebuilt and modernised. It’s simply incredible.
We all wait with eager anticipation to see yet more visitors enjoying our brilliant facilities.
The club runs several non-golfing events. The Chef and his team provide great high-quality food including Sunday lunches and a well-established Curry night on a Wednesday night during the Winter. These are well worth booking a table to both well in advance. I also recommend the cooked breakfast, lunches and fantastic cakes always available.
Despite the obvious global pandemic creating a crisis across the world which has clearly disrupted our lives I am determined to continue working with the Lady Captain Denise Tomblin, Senior Captain Len Collin and of course my Vice Captain Wayne Parks to try to pack in as much great golf as we can for the rest of this season. We will work tirelessly together to make our tenures as captains as successful as they can be.
A date for your diaries is the My Captains Day which is Saturday 3rd October 2020.
I wish you well for the rest of the season and look forward to seeing you on the fairway and in the club house throughout 2020/21.
All the very best to you all.
