The Ladies Open took place on Wednesday 14th August, and of course, it was a Wednesday, the ladies morning so it was of course bound to rain! Carole Paterson and I had, over the course of the last week, been paying particular attention to the weather forecast and, the week leading up to the Ladies Open, was grim. Thunder, lightning, heavy rain, it couldn’t be as bad as that day back in April for the Joint Charity Day, could it? Carole added an extra section to the starters brief to include detailed plans for inclement weather conditions!
The day arrived and the weather wasn’t all that bad; light drizzle. Robin Ewbank greeted my arrival in the car park, in a “hi viz” jacket at 0745 in the morning, but it wasn’t as bad as we had dreaded.
87 ladies (only one cancelled due to the weather) arrived to play in the Open from 19 different clubs including 70 visitors in total. The registration area was a hive of activity, ushering ladies in to sign in, given homemade biscuits (made by the ladies), two’s entered and instead of the usual raffle, a ball raffle instead.
I think, in the end, most ladies were so relieved that it wasn't pouring down with rain at any time that they returned from their games with smiles on their faces, saying they had mostly "stayed dry". The conditions were tough, with the wind picking up to blow the rain away, which meant that there were only 7 teams out of 29 to have more than 70 points with an away team in the end, from Enmore Park, being the eventual winners with 79 points. Nearest the Pins went to away players on the 7th, 12th and 17th and Ros Williams was the only player to score a 2. Unsurprisingly, she was extremely happy with her 4 boxes of balls!
My thanks go to the Senior’s Captain Bill Bond and members of the Senior section who helped both in the car park and on the 1st tee. Also to the ladies who made delicious biscuits, the registration team, the team that set up the day before, Caroline Lumley-Frank, for the flowers and Sandra Ford, for coordinating the final scores. To Paul, Andrew, Johnny, Andy and the staff for all their help on the day. However, my biggest “thank you” goes to Carole Paterson who, after coordinating the Ladies Open at Long Sutton for the last 5 years has decided this is her last year at organising this event. Thank you, Carole, very much indeed.
