On a pleasant morning with the threat of rain in the air, a strong Seniors Team led by Captain Bill were keen to avenge the heavy defeat last year and recover from a 10-5 mauling in this year's Round 1.
The senior men (not forgetting Veterans) had been in training for weeks and were keen to impress and grab back the bragging rights. No mean task.
Before the start, Captain Bill was faced with a major setback to his plan. Ladies Team Captain Denise, reported a last minute withdrawal and no reserve. Could this be a chance to grab the first point on a technicality? Not a bit of it, Denise was not having any of that and, as a further blow below the belt, Denise announced that she alone would take on the might of Bill and partner (serial winner) Dave Kennedy. Was this a cunning ploy or just bad luck? Starting on the 16th, the White tee seemed to be in a different county as the senior pair teed off. It was hard to see Denise as she walked to the Lady's tee. Clearly, Bill's cunning plan to bring the white tees up to the yellow's had been lost in communication or....?
Anyway, massive credit to Denise as she played flawlessly for a par 5 and an early lead. The senior pair recovered briefly from the earlier shock(s) as Bill had a 5 foot putt on 17 for a birdie 2 and missed, but still squared the match. From that moment on, Denise or 'Deadly D' played excellent golf and was too good for the Captain and his partner. However, some decent golf from the boys took the match down the 15th when Denise recovered with a great shot from the beach..sorry bunker, and halved in 5 to win 1 up.
After the match, the anticipation was at fever pitch as both Captain's waited for results.
Once again, Captain Bill was to be disappointed as his 'banker' pairing of hitherto unbeatable Ian Jackaman and Peter Clarke suffered an unexpected loss to Carole Paterson and Hilary Dennes. Well done ladies!
That was a real body blow to the Seniors prospects of winning the day and despite all the carefully chosen pairings winning their matches, Bill's team of 'warriors' just came up short losing narrowly 8-7 hence the ladies retained the coveted trophy with an overall score of 18-12.
Many congratulations Denise on both your own performance and captaining the Ladies to victory. My personal thanks to all the seniors team who did both me and the section proud.
Good luck next year Captain Len.
