Lady Captains Newsletter June edition

News, Events and Knockout Competitions : Lady Captains Newsletter June edition

Into May and early June and we start to get down to the serious business of playing golf with some run for the ball, the ground getting harder and no more mud!! We have played one Rogers Cup match, three Interclub League matches and a ladies friendly.  We tried to play our Mixed friendly against Bridport extremely inclement weather parked itself over the course and in the end an enjoyable meal (with no prospect of golf) was all that Bridport were able to offer.  Reports have already been posted on the Long Sutton Golf Club webpage so I won’t go into too much detail but I would like to congratulate Katharine Stringer, Carole Lancaster and Christine Turner for  volunteering and playing in their first Interclub league matches and to Judith Bailey for playing in her first friendly match.  Fantastic news going forward for the future of the section.  My thanks also to the Captains of these teams, Ros Williams, Sheena Smith, Valerie Thomas and Rachel Ewbank.

Since the last newsletter we have in our weekly competitions been competing to go forward to either national or regional events.  I have to thank Eliza Vail for having to undertake Jury Service when the rest of us were playing the Coronation Foursomes on Wednesday 8th May and for giving me her partner for the day Val Fraser. Val and I won the competition and go forward to play in one of the regional South venues, Weston Super Mare on Friday 19th July 2019.  Denise had an excellent medal round of gross 82, net 70 to deservedly win the Dickenson Cup, Denise goes through to play at Farrington Park GC on 29th August 2019.  The following week the bronze ladies competed for the Barlow Cup, this time a stableford competition, where Katharine Stringer had an equally impressive round scoring 39 points; narrowly beating Connie Stolworthy and Aideen Roche by 1 shot.  On the final Wednesday in May we played the re-arranged High-Low Cup.  Sue Clifford was partnered by Angela Body and they had an amazing round, scoring 48 points.  The trophy will be presented at the Ladies AGM.  Congratulations to all those players whose handicaps were reduced as a result of their previous good play.

Good luck to all those taking in part in Sunday's Mixed Open.  I would like to thank Carole Paterson who has single handedly driven this event, starting way back in January, proactively emailing and contacting all those who have taken part in the past, to achieve 39 pairs of players and arranging everything, including setting up for the day with the help of Caroline Lumley-Frank and Eileen Arundell.  Well done Carole!!  The weather looks fine early on so fingers crossed for a successful event.

This year I have asked Denise Tomblin to co-ordinate the Redwood Cup and I am delighted that she has agreed to do so. The first round is on Weds 3rd July 2019.  I know that you will be supportive to Denise and I encourage you to sign up early.

Regarding individual lady members, I would like to welcome two new ladies, both called Sue (Clifford and Kingston) to the Ladies Section.  I suspect this is going to cause some confusion but there is a lovely photograph of them both in glorious sunshine later in this report.

I also wish Kath Rushton a speedy recovery after falling and breaking her arm earlier this month.  Finally its lovely to see Marion Boulton back playing and for winning Division 3 in the Stableford and Barlow Qualifier on the 22nd May, after coming back from a recent knee replacement operation.

The best news however, I have saved till last.  The new ladies club shirts are with Andrew in the Pro Shop at now a slightly reduced price of £27 per shirt.  Thank you everyone for your patience and to Mandy and Andrew for all their hard work in procuring these shirts.

A warm welcome to Long Sutton Ladies Section to Sue Clifford (l) and Sue Kingston (r).  Sue C is relocating back to the UK from Dubai but has previously been a member at Burnham & Berrow amongst other clubs and is renovating her house in North Curry.  Sue K was previously a member at Taunton Vale so some of you may remember seeing her there although she played mainly at weekends as she was a working lady.
Two Wednesdays were dedicated to Australian Spoons, a national Foursomes competition held from the 1st January through to the end of May 2019.  Competitors could also pair up and play at any time during this period for the chance to play in the regional final at Launceston GC on Monday 1st July.  Pat Whitehead and I have qualified for the next stage, we are awaiting further details.
Paul's Practical Rules
Andrew earlier in the month gave the Ladies Section some practical tips on putting and exercises to improve putting.  In readiness for all of our forthcoming matches, Paul very kindly gave up his time to give some of the ladies practical advise on the new rules using the 5th green and the nearby bridge as good examples of what to do and not to do.  It was an extremely interesting exercise and being practical examples hopefully, will help us remember!!
Thank you to Chris Coates for her lovely photograph of our new parent swans, with their five signets.

One of my aims this year is to play with as many members as I can during my year as Captain.  So far it numbers 47:

Nigel B, Mandy H, Sue K, Sue C, Connie S, Valerie T, Diana M, Anne S, Gavin Baker, Christine T, Katherine S, Angela B, Eileen A, Pat W, Sally T, Joce D, Chris C, Ros W, Gwen C, Jean P, Cheryl S, Anne A, Eliza V, Sylvie C-T, Rod T, Hilary D, Sheena S, Coleen H, Aideen R, Mary M, Rachel E, Jennie R, Gill E, Lesley H, Caroline H, Jo C, Steve U, Judith B, Sarah M, Sandra F, Val F, Carole P, Ann M, Paul W, Bill B and Jack T.  For every new member I play with, I will donate £0.50 to my chosen charity. This may get expensive...!!!

For all you knitters out there, Chris has also brought my attention to the Macmillan Oncology Unit at Yeovil District Hospital.  They are collecting wool for the Oncology Unit and for all you 'knitters' out there, they are always looking for knitted squares or blankets; a neck to foot blanket being approximately 6ft x 4ft,   Please leave by the main noticeboard along with the Used Stamps and Milk bottle tops.

There are also books and jigsaws, and a contribution to the Lady Captain's Charity will always be welcomed.
