The Past Captain’s Shield took place last Sunday 20th September.  The competition was entered by 73 members, who contributed £73.00 to St Margaret’s Hospice and my thanks for those donations. The competition was well fought with two members fighting for 1st place with 41 points.  Luke Appleton just pipped Malcolm Head on the back 9.  Well played to both.

Within this competition, the Past Captain’s, play for the Past Captain’s Cup.  This Cup was presented to the Club by John Padfield when he was Captain and has been played for ever since.  This year I was pleased to see 20 of the 24 Past Captain’s playing, and for 18 of their wives and partners attending the traditional lunch afterwards. It was a grand day starting with bacon baps and coffee and ending with the lunch / evening and everyone enjoyed themselves.  This year the Cup was won with a substantial margin by Malcolm Head, who took home the trophy and an engraved whiskey tumbler from the Club Captain, as a memento.

Sunday 16th September 2015

Long Sutton Golf Club

On a gloriously sunny day with very little wind and almost perfect golfing conditions the Trounson Trophy was held on Somerset Golf Union’s President Tommy Tulk’s home course of Long  Sutton.

The Trounson Trophy is an Inter Club County handicap Bowmaker competition, medal format with 4 players making up a team with the best 3 scores to count off a maximum handicap of 18.  One player from each team in a match so every opportunity to go head to head against players from 3 other clubs.

21 teams from across the county competed on a challenging course perfectly prepared for the occasion by the green’s staff.

In an attempt to win and deliver the trophy to President Tommy Tulk on his home course Long Sutton fielded 4 teams; they duly obliged coming 1st, 2nd and 4th with Worlebury A in 3rd place.

The winning team Long Sutton A were represented by Paul Wills, Jon Elliot, Gary French and Ian Brown and they returned 3 best cards totalling 211 which was 2 under par – a terrific score. 2nd place Long Sutton C winning the Leonard Fisher Trophy was represented by Steve Stopforth, Wes Allen, Luke Appleton and Allan Pilkington.

Steve Stopforth also won the Presidents Trophy for the best nett score of 3 under par.
