The SGU Seniors County Stableford was held at Long Sutton Golf Club on Friday 7 Oct
Long Sutton Seniors Section gave great support to the event, with 32 out of the 80 competitors coming from the club providing 8 teams for the team event & enabling the county to place a Long Sutton in each of the 3 Balls to give guidance to the visitors to the club.
The day was a great success with all the visitors enjoying the day & commenting on how they were delighted with our greens. So may I congratulate Jonny & the green-keeping staff on the excellent preparation.
The overall results were also great success for the Club
In the Individual Stableford we had the winner, our own Bill Bond, winning the overall County Seniors Individual Trophy with a magnificent score of 41 Points & also his resultant new reduced Handicap!
Congratulation Bill on your success!!!

We are the CHAMPIONS!!!!!! ~ Long Sutton Win The 2016 Somerset Bowl
Somerset Bowl Update
We are the CHAMPIONS!!!!!!
Well where to start! What a team performance this year in the Somerset Bowl. We made the trip to Wells to play Worlebury in the final, both team fielding strong pairings. Out first for us, myself and Nick Northey, I think I win tee shot of the day for my dolly dropper of the first tee, only bonus was it was on the fairway! We fought hard but lost a 2 hole lead at the wrong time eventually going down 3&2, 1 nil to Worlebury. We could do nothing more than spectate now!
News from the on course support of John Williams was positive, Jamie Brodie and Chris Binding (receiving 8 shots) were cruising their match and ran out winners 6&5. 1 - 1.
Steve Southgate and Norman Banfield were locked in a titanic battle, ebbing and flowing, and through 16 were all square and went to the 18th 1 down. Meanwhile more good news from on course, Hugh Mcquire and John Parkinson strolled down the 16th 3 up, and having hit the green in 2, Hughie rolled the putt stone dead and the match was won, 2 – 1 to Long Sutton.
Next through 16 were Wesley Allen and Kev Purdy, winning the 16th saw them take the lead in their match for the first time. Stood around the 17th tee were 14 nervous players/supporters from both teams, Wes up first, adrenaline obviously getting to him as he smashed his 6 iron long. The opponents missed the green way left, we stood and watched from the tee box, one mind on Steve and Norman battling up 18 and the other on what could possibly be the winning hole/pair. Worlebury chipped on – 12 feet past the hole, Kev not facing a good lie chipped on – 15 feet past the hole. Wes to putt. What followed can only really be described by using a picture,
Wes rolled the putt in to make a 3, the celebration reminiscent of someone winning a major championship or the Ryder Cup! The Long Sutton crowd/players knew what had happened, 'Do you think he holed it?' someone jested, Worlebury were still to putt and we knew if it wasn’t holed then the Bowl was ours, unfortunately for them and fortunately for us the putt slid by and Long Sutton were triumphant. 3 -1 to us. Meanwhile Norman and Steve had won the 18th and were ready to go to the 1st again, but a half was claimed and Long Sutton won 3 ½ - 1 ½.
Let the celebrations commence, many hugs, fist bumps, kisses and even a tear from the President of Somerset/Chairman of Long Sutton Tommy Tulk, although he’ll protest it was a bit of dirt that blew in his eye if you ask him about it, personally I think it he knew how big the bar bill was going to be!
The team had a few photos and celebratory drinks at Wells before heading off for a Team meal. I’m sure we’ll be dining out on this one for a while yet! Congratulations to all that have represented the team this year, you’ve all contributed to us achieving this first for the club and I’d like to personally thank you all. I’ve been honoured to have been involved and to have been the on course Captain this year, special thanks to those who came to support us at Wells. The approach this year has been different to previous years and it’s clearly worked, massive thanks to John Williams for helping us to instigate this.
WE’RE IN THE FINAL of the Somerset Bowl !!!!
Somerset Bowl Semi Final Report:
WE’RE IN THE FINAL!!!! What can I say! A massive thank you, congratulations and well done to the team on Sunday 11th Sept. We travelled to Wedmore in good spirits, taking on a very strong Bath team. First out myself and Wesley Allen bringing home the 1st point with a 4 and 3 win, 1 – 0, next out our new pair of John Parkinson and Hughie McQuire running out 5 and 3 winners, 2 – 0, news was filtering in from the on course support of John Williams that the remaining 3 games were tight. We waited for our third pair of Gary French and Kevin Purdy (Unbeaten this season) to emerge from the 15th (a shot hole), they had taken the lead and were 1 up, they promptly won the 16th and headed to the 17th 2up with 2 to play, their opponents putting their ball out of bounds on the tricky driving hole with wind of the left. They closed the match out to win 3 and 1, 3 – 0 and the match was ours. Andy Moray and Nick Northey out fourth were also locked in a battle that took them all the way to 18, unfortunately losing 1 down. In the back match Jaime Brodie and Chris Binding made a fight of it but went down 3 and 2. But onwards we march, to Wells in fact on Sunday 25th September, please come along and support us.
