After losing both fixtures last season this was a match that we needed to win.
The course was in fine condition but was tricky with bright sunshine (just one short sharp shower!) and a stiff breeze.
The first team out was myself and Vice Captain Rod Tucker. The opposition, we found, were determined as we were 3 down at the turn. We rallied in the back nine to turn the match in our favour to win by 2 and 1.
Second out were Julian Stapleton (20) and David Kennedy(21) and were up against a pair of 16 handicappers who showed their mettle, but our pairing stayed the course coming in with a well fought half.
The third team of Peter Hill(18) and Len Collin(26) were up against Ray Francis (10) and Vice Captain Max Williams (22). Ray won the nearest to the pin (for Visitors) on the 17th . However, the home pair kept their cool and came home 2 and 1.
Ex-Captain Colin Hardaway, who was nursing a torn muscle and playing off 16 and youngster Steve Uzzell (20) came home with the best result of the day; 6 and 4 against a pair of 17 handicappers.
Martin Abbott (12) and Alastair Mullinuex (21) came up against an in form pair of Mike Gibbons (15) and Steve Burfitt(23) to go down 2 and 1
The final pairing of John Pearson (26) and Dave Butcher (now 21) came up against an old work colleague of Dave's John Blakesmith (15) and Z Wicking (known as Wicks and playing off of 18). Teeing of from the 16th the home team won the first hole with both players having a stroke allowance. However John Blakesmith soon put that right with a par on the 17th followed by a win on the 18th. We won the 1st to level the score and then halved the second before John Pearson soon showed the day he was going to having by winning the 3rd, to go 1 up; a lead that was retained until the 10th with both players winning holes or losing them. Then John Pearson lead the home pair home by winning the 11th, 12th and 13th to win the match by 3 and 2. During the tremendous downpour we had during the match, John Pearson also won the nearest to the pin in two on the fifth (for Home Players) . Indeed, he was the only Long Sutton player to hit the green in two that day.
An excellent all round team performance saw Long Sutton Seniors beat Rushmore Seniors 4.5 to 1.5.
The return fixture is on August 2nd with a first Tee Start of 10:30am. Lets do it again and return the favour of last year and beat them on their own track!!
Thank you all the Long Sutton team for making this a very enjoyable day for me as your Match Captain.
