On yet another glorious day, the Seniors Team with only one change to the side reversed the result in their return match against Lyme Regis at Long Sutton by winning 3 ½ to 2 ½, thus sharing the spoils over the home & away fixture 6 games each. Both side fielded similar team for both fixture, Sutton one change , Lyme 3 changes, most pairing playing their opponents from the 1st round.
1st out John Packett & Rich Bartin (match captain), who took the lead early in a very similar way to the start of the match at Lyme which we only a halved. The match continued very tight throughout, but with the Long Sutton pair keeping their heads in front most of the way round thanks to some good steady golf from John. It looked like the Lyme pair had repeated their fight back as they did at Lyme when they took the 14th & 15th holes to bring the match back to all square. A birdie by Rich on the 16th saw us back 1up. A half on the 17th & a great par by John on the 18th to half with the Lyme Captain, meant the Long Sutton took their match 1 up. A good start 1up
2nd Group out Mike Bowling & replacement partner Malcolm Dennes, had a battle on their hands to overturn the 4&3 defeat at Lyme. Obviously this was a stronger & very steady pairing which got their just victory of a 4&3, getting just revenge & the biggest Long Sutton victory of the day. Well done. Match 2 up to Long Sutton.
3rd Group out Glyn Ottery & Alastair Mullineux, a winning pair a Lyme, were out to try to repeat the performance against their pair. This had been a battle at Lyme, won by Glyn sinking putts from everywhere, so was always going to be yet another hard fought contest. Unfortunately, this time the Lyme Pair manage to marginally pull off a win (1up). Match now 2&1 to Long Sutton.
4th out Robin Ewbank & Peter Champness, narrowly defeated at Lyme 2&1, out to seek their revenge. Robin had held the pair together at Lyme, however change of fortune this time with Peter playing steady golf & the pair secure a 2&1 victory to get their revenge. Match now 3&1 to Long Sutton.
5th Group out were Andy Elphick & Mick Capps, our other winning pair at Lyme (winning 3&2). These were out against a change of Lyme player with matching handicaps. The match was hard fought & very even throughout with an overall result of shared honours, match halved. Overall Match won, Long Sutton leading 3 ½ to 1 ½.
Last group out were Senior Main Stay Peter Hill & John Rooks, which unfortunately had lost heavily against an on form Lyme pair, so were out to get an improvement & some revenge. This match was well balanced on handicap everyone off 19 so no shots. The match was hard fought but the Lyme pair played well & claimed the victory. However the Long Sutton pair had managed to reduce the deficit this time around.
Overall match result Long Sutton won 3 ½ to 2 ½. Well played side.
Mick Capps took the Long Sutton nearest the pin on the 7th.
