After losing 5 ½ to ½ at Home to Taunton & Pickeridge, we realised we need to pull out the stops if we were to come away some degree of pride for the match at T&P. Weather forecast was good, greens spiked but greens & course in were still in good condition.
First out for Sutton David Kennedy & Robin Ewbank. Our pair went quickly 4 down to an on form T&P pair. Our pair kept battling away but the early lost holes were difficult to recover, & after a lot of too &fro throughout the match, the end result was 4&3 to Pickeridge. Sutton 1 down.
Next pair out was our 2 left handers, Bob Smith & Richard Axe, this match was close through with never more than one in it until the 17th were Pickeridge pair scraped ahead by 2 to win this match. Long Sutton now 2 down, & looking like this could be another hefty defeat.
The captains were next out, Rich Bartin (Match Captain) & John Rooks again T&P captain & partner. The Long Sutton pair started well, 4 up after 5, our pair winning 2 holes a piece. The T&P then started a fight back, with the whole match seesawed between 4up & 2up to the Sutton pair, with John playing very good steady golf throughout. With T&P winning 14 & 15, match started to tighten up. A good half by John on 16th, meant match now Dormy, followed by a half on 17th by Rich, match over. Sutton won 2&1. Sutton now only 1 down.
Next pairing out were Dave Manning & Steve Burfitt. I had high hopes for this pair, following Steve’s great score on Friday at Enmore. The pair did not let me down, both playing good golf throughout the game & securing a great 5&4 win over a reeling T&P pair. Good news Match now all square.
5th Pair out Alan Webber & Peter Hill, both played steady golf throughout but were match against an on form T&P pairing playing great golf, who battled it out to win 2&1. Sutton now 1 down again, which meant our only hopes to share spoils was now resting with our final pair.
Last out, was our steady pairing of Glyn Ottery & John Packett. This was yet another close run match with not a lot of difference throughout. I expressed a sigh of relief as I saw our pair battle it out on the 18th Green, & got the thumbs up from Glyn as he left the green. A 2up win by our pair meant score 3 wins a piece & the match was halved, a great result for us following the home defeat.
Well done team.
Nearest the Pin for Long Sutton on 6th Green was Glyn Ottery.
