On a glorious summers morning the annual 'battle of the sexes" or more specifically, the Redwood Cup commenced. This year is the turn of the Seniors, led by Captain Bill and his team of 30 willing lambs..sorry senior men, to host the competition and seek to regain the bragging rights after last year's heavy defeat to Lady Captain Mandy and her team.
This year under the stewardship of Lady Vice Captain Denise, the task was no less formidable for Bill's Battlers especially after the Captain's drive off the first (WHITE) tee floated majestically OOB followed by partner Joe Jowett driving into the trees on the left. Lady VC Denise calmly walked up to the (RED) tee and smashed it down the middle and a par 4.
The second hole was Captain Bill's best and arguably only real quality contribution with a pitch and gimme for par 4. The delightful and very capable Connie proved a very able sidekick to the excellent golf and 'mega' driving of Denise. Not to be outdone by the quality golf on display, Joe had an impressive birdie 4 on the 4th. Anyway, despite some good golf (in patches) the senior pair finally succumbed to the 'dream team' on the 15th for a 5&4 loss. Well done to Denise and Connie, best team won!
After the game, there was an anxious wait for the remaining 14 matches to finish. Despite winning 3 of the last 6 matches, to gain some respectability, Captain Bill's team go into Round 2 needing to turnaround a 10-5 deficit.
Before round 2 in September, the Senior Men will be watching videos of the Miracle of Medina in 2012 when Europe (remember them!) overturned a 10-4 deficit to win 14 1/2 to 13 1/2. Who will be the 'Postman' (Ian Poulter) to deliver for the Seniors? Congratulation to the Ladies and bring it on!
