Seniors lose at Cricket St Thomas

Seniors Reports and News : Seniors lose at Cricket St Thomas

After a close fought home match earlier in the season which Long Sutton won 31/to 21/2, in spite of a hole in one by Cricket St Thomas  Captain Peter Spencer-Farr, we anticipated another close encounter. Unfortunately that did not turn out to be the case and we were on the end of what on the face of it looked like a bit of a drubbing, 5 - 1! However the final result does not tell the whole story.

The first pairing of Len Collin and Simon Scarborough playing their Seniors Captain Peter Spencer-Farr and Nobby Hodder, yes a member of the same Hodder family, were nip and tuck until half way down the back 9 when Simon hit a purple patch parring 4 of the last 5 holes for us to run out winners 2 and 1. The second 4 ball out were snapping at our heels all the way round, literally, with balls landing on the green whilst we were putting on at least 2 occasions! Unfortunately Rich Bartin and Bob Smith, both nursing injuries that required them to share a buggy, ended up being soundly beaten 4 and 3. To be fair Rich was conceding a lot of shots in his match! His consolation was to win the nearest the pin by the narrowest of margins on the 9th after Len, playing in the group in front of him, had put a superb drive onto the green that looked certain to be a winner!!!

Going out 3rd Peter Hill and Richard Axe lost a tight fought match 2 and 1, whilst Dave Butcher and David Kennedy fell to the heaviest defeat losing 5 and 3, and that inspite of a really good opening few holes which had their opponents seriously rattled. However they were up against a 6 handicapper on his home turf!

The last two pairings of Robin Ewbank and Martin Howlett, losers 1 down, and Peter Champness and Malcolm Dennes, losers 2 and 1, were both narrowly defeated in closely fought encounters. So whilst the end result showed a comprehensive victory for Cricket St Thomas, it could so easily have gone the other way.

My thanks to all who turned out to represent the club on what was a lovely day for golf. Everybody seemed to be in good spirits and the day was rounded off by an excellent meal. Hopefully next season we will be super motivated to overturn this result!!
