On a glorious day, hot but with helpful cooling breeze, the Seniors Team put up a brave fight at Lyme Regis but were narrowly defeat 3 1/2 to 2 1/2.
The course was in great condition, fairways a little brown from the heat, but greens were fabulous as always.
1st out John Packett & Rich Bartin (match captain). Things started well with John parring the first with a shot to win the hole. After 2 more holes things were great 3up after 3, looking like 1st win on the card. However, not to be, the Lyme Captain & Partner battled back to reduce deficit to 1 at the turn. A spurt at the start of the back 9 saw the Long Sutton pairing back to 3up, but a big fight back by the Lyme Pair through 15, 16 & 17, took the match to all square coming down the last. With everyone parring the last, the match ended in a friendly half.
2nd group out Glyn Ottery & Alastair Mullineux against a 9 & 16 HCP pairing, which looked like quite a battle ahead for the Long Sutton Pair. Glyn arrive with new putter & driver, never use before, was this a wise idea? However, by the end of the match the Lyme pair wished he had left the putter at home. Glyn could not miss a putt on the day, sinking putts from everywhere. Looks like a good decision as it was a close match Long Sutton pairing wining 2&1. Overall match looked to be going well Long Sutton 1up.
3rd Group out Robin Ewbank & Peter Champness, were up against from the start, whilst getting a number of shots were against a very steady Lyme Pair. However the Long Sutton pair played some good steady golf and were only narrowly defeated 2&1.
4th Group out Mike Bowling (Mr Steady Eddie) & Chris Hockey, battled against an on form pairing from Lyme, but unfortunately lost 4&3
5th Group out were Andy Elphick & Mick Capps, Mick stepped into the side at the last minute as replacement. Again they were up against a steady pair, but the Long Sutton played good golf, with a sterling performance from Mick, leading the pair to a good 3&2 win. Match now 2 ½ to 2 ½, leaving the decider down to the last group.
Last group out were Senior Main Stay Peter Hill & John Rooks. Due to a last minute change in the Lyme team they were matched against a 7 & 13 hcp Lyme Pair which was always going to be a difficult task.
Unfortunately the Long Sutton pair were unsuccessful on the day and lost their match, thus leaving the overall match result 3 ½ to 2 ½ win for Lyme Regis.
Glyn Ottery had not only great day with putter, winning his match but went round course 5 under Hcp & took nearest the pin on the 8th hole.
Well done Glyn.
Many thanks to Mick Capps who stepped in at the last minute & also played some great golf.
I believe everyone enjoyed the day & looking forward to the return match at Long Sutton on the Thursday 15th Aug, where hopefully repay the favour to the Lyme side where I intend to play the same team & pairings where possible.
