Chris Hockey presenting the Past Captains' Away Day Trophy to Nigel Griffiths
Our first attempt to play was thwarted on the 12th December 2016 by bad weather, our only consolation being a bacon butty but a less than joyful drive back.
The rearranged date of 9th March was once again under threat of cancellation but our fears evaporated to bring a warm and windless day, ideal for golf. The course condition was unexpectedly good with only the occasional damp patch. Seven temporary greens prevailed however, all thankfully placed in front of their respective greens. The normal greens were in a very acceptable condition making life a little easier.
The first nine holes of the day were devoted to The Past Captains Away Day Trophy won this year with a very credible score of 19 Stableford points by Nigel Griffiths. Our most recent past Captain, Chris Hockey presented the Trophy to Nigel explaining a little of the events history.
The second nine holes were played, scoring in stableford in a Bowmaker format. The twenty players attending the event were divided into five teams of four of similar H/C strength. The scores ranged from 56 points to 45 points in total with prizes presented to the top three teams. Prizes were also awarded for Nearest the Pin for two par 3's and one par 4, after two shots, together with The Longest Drive, all listed below .
One person had a ' stonking ' round......Malcolm Dennes , who scored 18 and 25 for a total of 43 points on the day. I have told him I would report this unfortunate incident to Capt. Rod, at present on holiday in Spain, and that he should prepare himself for a cut to single figures on Rods return! The loss of colour in his face was quite alarming but we put a cold towel round his neck and he slowly recovered.
The late lunch at 4:30 was enjoyed by all. The main course was a home made chicken and mushroom pie followed by a restricted selection of seemingly only 200 delicious puddings! After lunch I presented the many prizes to the fortunate winners and set up the usual counselling for the remainder.
One had a real feeling that throughout the Honiton GC they wanted you to have a good day, from Adrian and his merry band in the pro shop to Gill and Sue in the restaurant, The service was excellent and helped to make it a very worthwhile day.
