Playing in hot sunshine under a clear sky the seniors took on a strong Dorset team on Monday 15th July. Glyn Ottery and Len Collin led off the team against Match Captain Keith Bassingthwaighte and and his partner Geoff Plant. Geoff is a 7 handicapper but he was suffering with a strapped up knee which was awaiting an operation. The home team got off to a flying start and Glynn was on fire throughout his round. We took an early lead and steadily built a commanding advantage, eventually running out winners 7 and 6. Len even managed to win the nearest the pin prize on the 7th with a drive which was all of 20 feet from the pin! His was the only name on the card! He did better on the 9th putting it to a foot from the pin but there were no prizes today on that one!
The rest of the team came up trumps too inspite of some set-backs. Mike Stringer, partnering Robin Ewbank in the last group out, had to retire ill after just one hole. Happily, after a trip to A & E, he is now at home recuperating with lots of anti-biotics, a ban on booze and enforced early nights! Get well soon Mike! Not to be deterred Robin rounded up a stray senior on the 3rd hole, Terje Liljebakk, who agreed to fill the vacant slot and they managed to register a narrow but valuable win, 1 up.
Mike's was not the only enforced withdrawl. Andy Grayson, partnering David Harfield in the second match out, only managed 7 holes before the heat got to him forcing him to abandon and struggle back to the club house. Thankfully he did not require a trip to A & E and is recovering well at home. David struggled on manfully on his own as there were no other stray golfers to be seen, eventually succombing 3 and 1!
Andy Elphick and Bob Smith enjoyed a close and evenly matched encounter coming through for a narrow win, 1 up. In additon Andy scored extra "brownie points" by finding the ball I lost on the 13th!
Dave Kennedy and Gavin Baker won their match 3 and 1 whilst Mike Poole and Richard Axe had a strong win 4 and 2. Thanks to Richard for agreeing to play in spite of a lack of match fitness - good to see you back on the course again Richard.
My thanks again to all who took part in a very good win for Long Sutton 5 to 1. That should help boost Bill's Stats!
