Seniors record BIG home win against Orchardleigh

Seniors Reports and News : Seniors record BIG home win against Orchardleigh

On a overcast, humid and still day a strong Long Sutton line up welcomed Vice Captain Rob Miller and our friends from Orchardleigh GC. After a creditable drawn match in our season opening fixture Captain Bill was looking to continue the sequence of home wins.

Match 1
Having shamelessly picked Rod "Mr Reliable" Tucker as his playing partner, Captain Bill was not to be disappointed. The match started with some quality golf delivered mainly by Rod and Big Mike (good value off 14) although VC Rob (20) with a shot, claimed the 2nd to take an early lead..
On the 3rd, having pitched over the green and then 20 ft past the hole, Rod calmy sank the putt for an unlikely half to avoid going 2 down.
On the 4th with Rod and Rob both going OB it was left to Bill and Mike who both had shots to battle it out. Given Mike's performance so far, the omens were not good. However, inspired by his partner (chatting to Rob during play) Bill was on the green in three and a 12 ft put for birdie and a win. You guessed....a three putt to half.
At the turn the home pair were 1 down and time for the Tucker master class, except for the OB on the 12th when Bill stepped up to win in 3.
Going to the 15th at 3 up with 4 to play, Rod secured the win with a birdie 3 to win 4&3. Really enjoyable match played in great spirit of fun and sportsmanship.
Match 2
The old pals pairing of Graham (Brimble) and Barry 'Cully' Cullimore (find of the season) were well matched with John (14) and Brian (21) but thankfully proved too strong.
Orchardleigh went 1 up at the first with a good par by John their 14 handicapper, but the reliable Mr Brimble soon squared the match with a par.
It was nip and tuck for the rest of the front 9, with pars all the way (bar 1 hole) and all square at the turn.
The back 9 started in a similar fashion, with the away pair going 1up with a par on the 10th, only for the scores to be level with another Brimble par on the 12th.
This proved the turning point, as the 'old pals' pairing playing good golf, gradually turning the screw to finally win 3 and 1. This after a Cully putt to half the 16th to par, and dormy 2. The match finishing on the 17th with yet another par.
Match 3
To quote the ever modest Rich, "This was a singles match with Dave (Harfield) against Mike (17) with me constantly uttering, this one is over to you Dave." A really close match with the home pair winning 1 up. Well done Dave.
Match 4
Having gone 2 up after 2 holes the new pairing of Chris 'lefty' Hockey and Bill 'the heckler' Campbell were pegged back to all square at the 9th.
Holes were shared evenly on the back nine until Chris missed a short putt for a birdie on the 15th. This proved costly despite Bill making par on 16 and 17 (Won N/P) and eventually Guy made par to win for Orchardleigh on the 18th.
Match 5
The dream team of Mike (Poole)and LSGC golfing great, Dave (Kennedy) played Ray (16) and Martin (19). Mike was giving shots despite been out driven by both Ray and Martin. The first nine holes were very tight with the lead switching a number of times and there never being more than 1 hole to either team. Ray won the visitors nearest the pin on the 9th but Mike managed to win the hole with an excellent down the hill shot to leave the home pair 1 up at the turn. Mike won the 10th and Dave the 11th for LS to lead 3up. Back came Ray and Martin at the 13th and 14th with winning pars. The 15th was halved in 4's. Dave won the 16th with a par 5 with Martin's putt just missing the hole. Mike was next to the hole for 2 at the 17th and we all shook hands and agreed we had had a great close game with everyone playing some good golf.
Match 6
The 'gentlemen' pairing of Peter (Champness) and Alan (Webber) proved far too strong for their opponents, Steve (12) and Robert (28) who never really recovered after a birdie from Alan on the 3rd. Peter played his part admirably by contributing a few pars to press home the advantage and eventually winning 6&5.
The game was played in good humour and overall was closer than the score suggested
Many thanks everyone for delivering an impressive 5-1 win.
Bill
Seniors and Match Captain.
