Seniors wilt in the Enmore heat!
On a glorious summers day in the the searing heat of the Quantocks, 16 LSGC seniors (& vets) started and 16 returned to the clubhouse unscathed apart from bruised egos, cries of 'banditry' and faces like boiled lobsters.
- Glyn Ottery and Steve Uzzell lived up to their 'dream team' billing by securing our only win 3&2. Well done guys!
- Jimmy Q standing on the 1st tee shouting "where is everyone?" the only time Jim and partner Len (aka Wit & Grit) were in front losing 3&1.
- Chris Hockey chipping in on the 7th after driving in the water for a 3 nett 2. Well done partner.
- Doug Hamilton asserting "Tony (26 handicap) needs fitting for a poncho and sombrero"
- Alex Morrice sending his trolley for a trip through the bunker on the 10th
- Martin Abbott winning the nearest the pin in 3 prize on the 18th. Jimmy saying that was for 4....no Jim it WAS 3. Well done Martin and unlucky Jimmy.
- Dave Harfield (with partner Franco) saying "They had a nett 70...what can you do?"....answers on a postcard.
- Finally, after a fire alarm the players and Enmore staff were treated to the sight of Alex in his underpants arriving at the fire assembly station followed by Franco. A sight for sore eyes!!
Overall we had a fantastic day despite losing 5-3 halving four matches. Big thanks to a really sporting and friendly Enmore team led by Captain Steve and without exception we all had fun - well most of us!!
We look forward to our return match on 9th August
My thanks to all the team

Runners up were Gavin Baker and Chris Jowett
Third place went to John Paterson, our club Captain, and Sally Morrice.
Cherry Dobson won the Ladies nearest the pin prize
Franco Calandrini won the Seniors nearest the pin prize
This year it was the turn of the Seniors to take responsibility for the Joint Charity day. This consists of a Mixed Greensomes competition followed by a meal and prize presentation. 44 Seniors and 24 Ladies took part.
Representatives from both the Seniors and Ladies Captain’s charities attended and gave short outlines of the work of their respective organisations.
After the meal Steve Uzzell conducted a ‘Heads and Tails’ game with his usual panache. It was won by Chris Jowett who generously donated her winnings to the Joint Charities.
Franco Calandrini and Cherry Dobson won the two nearest the pin prizes. The main competition was hotly contested with four teams in the countback for third place. The eventual winners were Tim Marshall and Gwen Clarke. The runners up were Gavin Baker and Chris Jowett, and third place went to John R Paterson, our club Captain, and Sally Morrice.
A commendable total of £776 was raised for the joint charities.
Mandy and I wish to thank everyone who contributed and gave their time to make the day a success.
Long Sutton Seniors invited to play in Mendip Spring Anniversary Trophy
Mendip Spring Anniversary Trophy ~ Senior’s Team Event
Long Sutton Seniors Section were invited by Mendip Spring to enter a team in the event this year for the first time. We accepted the invite & entered what seemed a strong team of 8. The event was attended by 12 Clubs. It was a great day enjoyed by all who attended.
Unfortunately the team, whilst returning good scores, ended up middle of the group with respectable total of 148 points. The winners (The Bristol) returned
a magnificent score of 168, 10 points more than the second place team. So we would have needed a miracle to have taken the trophy this year, i.e. an average
of 42 points for each pair.
Long Sutton Team: Nigel Griffiths & Glyn Ottery– 41 pts (we thought a very good score)
Franco Calandrini & Rich Bartin - 37 pts
Alec Lyon & Ian Jackaman - 36 pts
Martin Hawkins & Mike Bowling - 34 pts
A great “thank you” to Glyn Ottery from me for stepping in at the last minute, due to withdrawal of Len from an illness.
Seniors lose at Bridport on a lovely day for golf!
Match Captain Steve Uzzell reports that in slightly windy, but otherwise very pleasant conditions our team of golfers eventually succumbed to the superior local knowledge of our Bridport opponents in a generally close fought match.
The golfers of Bridport, under the leadership of their Captain David Buckland, hosted us most magnificently and Steve was able to thank him and his team for a wonderful day during his speech. He also confidently predicted that we would be looking to make our local knowledge count in the return fixture on the 3rd July, when Long Sutton golf course should be in tip top condition.
Seniors Past Captain's Away Day
On the 24th April 30 Seniors arrived at Upavon G C to play for the Past Captains Trophy. The weather was fine but very windy, the Seniors coped with the conditions very well with some good scores on the Day. We had Blind Pairs and nearest the Pin on the 18th (Colin Hardaway) and 8th ( Peter Bell).
The Trophy winner was Glyn Ottery with a fine score of 37 points the runner up was Peter Bell with 36 points. Franco briefly had the 2nd place balls but organiser Rod Tucker had to remove him due to a card error; painfull !!!!
